Description
Azekura Kanara is a prominent figure in the southern region of Satsuma, where he rules a small port town as the captain of a pirate band. He is a tall man, standing around seven shaku, and is the fifth opponent that the main character Shichika Yasuri faces in his quest to collect the twelve Deviant Blades. At the age of thirty-eight, he is the owner of the unique Deviant Blade known as Zokutou Yoroi, a suit of armor rather than a traditional sword.
Kanara's background is defined by tragedy and a desire for revenge. As a boy from the Ryukyu Kingdom, he and his younger sister Kokoro secretly boarded their father's fishing boat, which was then attacked by pirates. The pirates killed everyone on board, including his sister, but kept Kanara as a servant because they needed someone for chores. While in captivity, he was ordered to clean the suit of armor, Zokutou Yoroi. After five years of servitude, his body had grown significantly, and at a drinking party, the pirate captain jokingly told him to try on the armor, which no one else could wear. Once he donned it, Kanara immediately used its power to slaughter the pirates who had killed his family, annihilating them and taking over the group to become the new captain. From that moment on, he swore never to remove the armor in front of anyone.
In terms of personality, Kanara is boisterous, bold, and confident, often teasing and mocking his opponents during combat. When the strategist Togame and Shichika arrive in his port town to observe a fighting tournament, he becomes infatuated with Togame at first sight. This attraction is rooted in the past, as Togame's appearance strongly reminds him of his deceased sister, who would have been the same age. His motivation for confronting the protagonists is therefore personal and romanticized; he strikes a bargain with Togame, proposing a duel with Shichika. If Kanara wins, Togame will become his woman. If he loses, he will hand over the Yoroi armor and provide his pirates as support for her journey.
During the fight, Kanara's primary role is as an adversary who tests Shichika's abilities. His possession of the Yoroi armor forces Shichika to adapt, as the suit is the most defensive of the Deviant Blades, capable of deflecting most physical attacks. Kanara wields the armor using a technique passed down through his pirate crew called Touzoku Kamome, where he extends the small blades covering the Yoroi to cut opponents while ramming into them. Despite his confidence, Shichika eventually defeats him by throwing him into the air and letting the force of his fall to the ground incapacitate him. This makes Kanara the first opponent to survive a battle with Shichika over a Deviant Blade. His key relationship, aside from his brief but intense infatuation with Togame, is with Shichika, whom he views as a rival to be overcome. Even after his defeat, his spiteful nature shows through; he secretly orders the ship that Togame and Shichika board to change its course to a different destination as a form of petty revenge.
Despite losing the Yoroi armor, Kanara is said to remain the most popular fighter in his arena, suggesting his resilience and the lasting impression he has made in his region. His development shows a man who transformed from a captive slave into a powerful leader through an act of brutal revenge, and who continues to be driven by the lingering emotional wounds of his past.
