Description
Mitsubachi Maniwa is a ninja and one of the twelve heads of the Maniwa Ninja Corps, serving as a member of the Insect Squad. His name translates to honey bee, and he dresses in a black-and-yellow-blue sleeveless ninja outfit that reflects this insect motif, earning him the nickname Thorn Mitsubachi. He is the youngest and tallest member of the Insect Squad, and he stands out among his peers for his gentle, fair, and calm temperament. Unlike many of his fellow ninja, Mitsubachi is not particularly driven by personal desire or ambition; he is reserved and tends to avoid unnecessary conflict, preferring to keep peace with his comrades. His role in the story is closely tied to the Maniwa Corps’ mission to collect the Deviant Blades. Alongside his squadmates Kamakiri Maniwa and Chōchō Maniwa, he is tasked with kidnapping Nanami Yasuri, the elder sister of the protagonist Shichika Yasuri. During this mission, the Insect Squad confronts Nanami, who proves to be an overwhelming opponent. Mitsubachi is the third and final member of the squad to be killed by Nanami, falling in the fourth episode of the series. In terms of abilities, Mitsubachi wields a katana and employs a ninpō called Makibishi Shidan, a technique that allows him to launch small, hook-tipped caltrops with pinpoint accuracy from distances of up to twenty jo (roughly sixty meters). These caltrops are coated with poison and designed to be extremely difficult to extract, immobilizing his target so that he can close in and deliver a finishing blow. While he is loyal to his squad, particularly to Kamakiri and Chōchō, his cautious and conflict-averse nature leads him to recognize when the odds are against them, yet he ultimately follows his orders to the end. His character does not undergo significant development, as his defeat comes early in the narrative, but his brief presence highlights the range of personalities within the Maniwa Corps and the lethal threat posed by Nanami.
