Description
Ginkaku Uneri is a swordsman who resides in Gekoku Castle, a structure standing alone in the vast desert of the former country of Inaba. He serves as the wielder of the Deviant Blade known as Zantō Namakura. The name of his signature technique is Zerosen, a devastatingly fast sword-drawing art.

The background of Ginkaku is rooted in the history of his family. He is the tenth-generation descendant of Kinkaku Uneri, a samurai from the Sengoku period who, after being ordered to surrender his sword during a nationwide sword hunt, rebelled against his lord. Kinkaku barricaded himself in his home and, using the same Deviant Blade and iaijutsu techniques, single-handedly defeated an army of ten thousand soldiers sent to subdue him. He was ultimately expelled from his domain but remained in the region, passing down the sword and the family's fighting style through the generations. Ginkaku inherited both the blade and the duty of guarding it. At some point before the story begins, the land of Inaba inexplicably turned into a barren desert. The population fled, leaving Ginkaku as the sole occupant of the decaying Gekoku Castle, which he illegally occupied after all other buildings were buried by sand.

Ginkaku is characterized by a profound and weary sense of purpose. He is a depressing figure, living in a state of perpetual fatigue and sleepiness, having spent years locked in a small room within the castle, constantly alert. He believes a warrior must live to protect something, yet the land he is sworn to defend has become a lifeless desert. His deepest wish is to see Inaba return to its former beauty, a desire that the strategist Togame acknowledges as an impossibility. This realization leaves him with nothing meaningful to protect but the castle room he inhabits and the ancestral sword he wields. He does not appear to be driven by the poison of the Deviant Blade that afflicted his ancestor, but rather by a personal code that requires him to have a purpose, no matter how hollow it has become. His hobby is listed as sleeping, and he claims to have never felt fully awake in his life.

His primary motivation is simply to continue guarding. He remains in his room to protect the last remnants of his family's legacy and his own identity as a warrior. When Togame and Yasuri Shichika arrive to claim Namakura, Togame attempts to negotiate, offering him anything in exchange for the sword. Ginkaku's only request is to have the desert restored to its former fertile state, a condition she cannot meet. With no other goal to pursue, he chooses to fight to the death to defend the one thing he has left.

In the story, Ginkaku serves as the second opponent that Shichika must defeat in his quest to collect the twelve Deviant Blades for the shogunate. He has already killed members of the Maniwa Ninja Corps who attempted to infiltrate the castle. Upon Shichika and Togame's arrival, his role is that of a formidable and seemingly invincible gatekeeper. The encounter takes place entirely in his chosen battleground, a cramped room that maximizes the effectiveness of his technique. After a failed negotiation, he attacks Togame, who is saved only by Shichika's intervention. Shichika is forced to devise a strategy to overcome an opponent whose attack is too fast to perceive.

Ginkaku's key relationships are limited due to his isolation. His primary connection is to his ancestor, Kinkaku, whose legacy he upholds. He interacts antagonistically with Togame, whom he nearly kills, and with Shichika, his destined opponent. He does not form a bond with them but rather serves as a mirror, reflecting Shichika's own evolving understanding of what it means to protect someone. Shichika, who initially cares for nothing but Togame's orders, begins to grasp the concept of fighting for another's sake by facing Ginkaku, who fights for the memory of his land.

Ginkaku's development is minimal, as he is a static character whose fate is sealed. His arc concludes with his death. After being defeated, he expresses a sense of relief, finally able to sleep peacefully. His final words, "good night," signify the end of his long, weary vigil.

His notable abilities are centered entirely on his mastery of iaijutsu, the art of drawing the sword to cut down an opponent in a single motion. His primary technique, Zerosen, is executed with such blinding speed that it is imperceptible to the naked eye; Shichika cannot even see the blade leave its sheath. Ginkaku's preferred fighting ground is the small room he occupies, as the technique requires the opponent to approach from the front. His signature ultimate technique is Zantō Gari. By cutting his own shoulder and allowing his blood to soak into the scabbard, he eliminates the friction between the sheath and the blade. This allows him to draw and strike at vastly increased speeds, enabling him to perform rapid sequences of attacks, such as Zerosen Formation: Five Lives or Ten Lives. The bloodshed also makes his attacks progressively faster. The one critical weakness of his technique is a blind spot directly above his head, as his style is designed for linear, horizontal cuts. This vulnerability is ultimately exploited by Shichika to defeat him.
