Description
Ichiro Fujiki is a student at Kengayama High School and a core member of the group that surrounds the protagonist, often referred to as the Megu-dan. His most defining characteristic is his profound ordinariness. Described as having no special qualities in appearance, intelligence, or physical strength, Ichiro is the picture of an average person. He has a timid disposition and droopy eyes that contribute to his unassuming look, and he personally holds a very low opinion of his own looks, going so far as to feel it puts him at a disadvantage in life.

Despite his mediocrity, Ichiro is a deeply loyal and selfless individual. While his initial reaction to any dangerous or unusual situation is often fear and trembling, he possesses a hidden well of courage that emerges when his friends are in need. He is consistently portrayed as someone who puts others before himself. For the sake of Megumi, he has stood alongside the fearsome Genzo Soga, demonstrating a quiet bravery that contradicts his usual cowardly demeanor. This loyalty is a key part of his personality, making him a reliable, if reluctant, ally.

Ichiro is driven primarily by his romantic feelings for Megumi Amatsuka, which are the catalyst for most of his actions. He is one of the few characters who openly has a crush on her, yet he is painfully aware of the reality of his situation. He recognizes the significant barrier between himself and Megumi, and he understands that his role is that of a supportive friend rather than a potential love interest. This awareness leads him to be passive in his approach, preferring to stay close to her as a steadfast companion rather than actively pursuing her. This unrequited love is a core part of his motivation and shapes his interactions within the group.

In the story, Ichiro serves as the relatable everyman, a grounding presence among a cast of larger-than-life and eccentric personalities. His normalcy makes the extraordinary traits of characters like Megumi and Genzo stand out even more. He is a founding member of the group, having become close to Megumi on her first day at school. His role is often to be the voice of common sense or to be the victim of the chaotic events that unfold around him. Despite his lack of special powers or hidden talents, he remains a consistent and active part of the main cast throughout the narrative.

His key relationships further define him. His feelings for Megumi Amatsuka are the most significant, though she never reciprocates them in a romantic way, and he accepts this, remaining a good friend. His relationship with Genzo Soga evolves drastically from initial hostility and fear to a deep-seated respect and loyalty. He goes as far as to use his own grocery money to help Genzo save face, a silent gesture of thanks. On a superficial level, he still finds Genzo annoying, but his true opinion is one of respect. He is closest with Tasuke Yasuda, with whom he shares the common bond of admiring Megumi, and they are often seen together casually. Conversely, he holds a strong, hidden disdain for Keiko Tanaka, whom he finds pretentious and calls an evil princess, though he never expresses this openly.

The most notable development Ichiro undergoes is internal growth in courage and resolve. He starts as a perpetually fearful and pessimistic individual, quick to give up. Over the course of the story, he becomes more determined and emotionally mature. This growth is realistic; he does not suddenly become a hero or gain superhuman abilities. Instead, he remains an ordinary person who learns to face extraordinary circumstances with a firmer resolve. In a life-threatening situation, he was able to face death with a cool mind and even taunt a powerful enemy, revealing a bravery that had been cultivated through his experiences.

As for his abilities, Ichiro does not possess any secret techniques or hidden powers. His skills are those of a normal, albeit slightly more fit, teenager. Through hanging out with the physically imposing Genzo and working out, he developed some basic fighting skills and improved his stamina. After swimming frequently, he gained the ability to run ten kilometers without getting tired. However, these minor improvements do not elevate him beyond his station as an average person, which is the very source of his unique role and appeal within the story.
