Description
Anzu Masaki is a central character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise who appears in Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Movie. She is a childhood friend of Yugi Mutou and a student at Domino High School. Anzu is a spirited and athletic teenager with a strong sense of justice. Her most defining personal goal is to save enough money to move to New York City after graduation to pursue her dream of becoming a professional dancer. To achieve this, she takes on various part-time jobs, which is a consistent aspect of her character across different storylines. Her birthday is August 18.

In the movie, Anzu works at the Duel Monsters Center, a local card shop and gathering place for duelists. Her friends, including Yugi, are surprised to discover her working there, which mirrors earlier instances in the series where they found her employed at a burger restaurant. While at the center, she recognizes a regular customer named Shougo Aoyama, a shy boy who is also Yugi’s neighbor, and she wonders if his acquisition of a powerful card, the Red-Eyes Black Dragon, will finally inspire him to duel.

Personality-wise, Anzu is known for her strong will, her supportive nature, and her deep loyalty to her friends. She often acts as the emotional anchor for the group, frequently delivering impassioned speeches about the strength and importance of their bond. She is kind-hearted and has a spunky side, particularly when defending others from mistreatment. During the events of the movie, when a crisis unfolds involving the ancient Pyramid of Light, Anzu’s determination shines through. As the situation becomes dangerous, her soul is separated from her body and drawn into the Millennium Puzzle, where she joins Yugi and their friends Joey and Tristan in a spiritual realm to confront the malevolent entity Anubis.

Anzu’s key relationships are central to her role. She shares a close, long-standing friendship with Yugi Mutou, for whom she has deep affection, though the nature of her feelings is complicated by the existence of Yugi’s other personality, the spirit of the Pharaoh often called Yami Yugi. She is also good friends with Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler) and Hiroto Honda (Tristan Taylor), forming the core group that consistently supports one another. In the movie, her relationships with all of them are tested as they face danger together, and her presence in the Millennium Puzzle is crucial for offering moral support.

While Anzu is not primarily a duelist, she is proficient enough to have bested Jonouchi on occasion in the past. Her notable abilities lie more in her athleticism and her courage. She is physically fit and not afraid to take action, which has included confronting bullies or even punching a customer who harassed her. She is also an observant and quick-thinking individual who can grasp the flow of a duel even when she is not a participant, acting as a knowledgeable cheerleader for her friends.
