Description
Joseph "Joey" Wheeler, known as Katsuya Jonouchi in the original Japanese version, is a central character whose background is marked by hardship. The divorce of his parents when he was ten years old led to a separation from his younger sister, Serenity. He remained to live with his father, a man whose gambling addiction and alcoholism created a difficult and impoverished home life. This financial strain forced Joey to take on various jobs, such as a newspaper delivery route, from a young age to help pay off his father's debts and support himself. As a student at Domino High School, he was initially a bully and a schoolyard troublemaker, often seen with his friend Tristan Taylor.

Joey's personality is a blend of rough-edged bravado and deep-seated loyalty. He is impulsive, quick to act, and can be easily provoked, often speaking in a blunt or confrontational manner. In the Japanese version, this is reflected in his choice of rude language. Despite this tough exterior, he possesses a kind heart and a fierce sense of honor. His defining characteristic is his unwavering devotion to his friends, most notably Yugi Muto. A significant turning point in his life occurred when Yugi stood up for him against a teacher, an act that inspired Joey to change his ways, retrieve a piece of the Millennium Puzzle he had thrown away, and become Yugi's most trusted companion. This bond is so fundamental that the first characters of their names form the word for "friendship" in Japanese.

Joey's primary motivation throughout the story is twofold. His initial drive to become a Duelist stems from a desperate need to help his sister, Serenity, who is slowly losing her eyesight. He enters the Duelist Kingdom tournament to win the prize money required for her expensive eye operation. Beyond this, his motivations grow to include a personal challenge: to prove his own strength, gain respect, and become a duelist worthy of standing beside his friends, particularly his friendly rival, Seto Kaiba, who often dismisses him as weak.

In the story, Joey serves as a key supporting protagonist and a source of comic relief, often showing a fear of ghosts and overestimating his own abilities. However, his role in a film like Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Movie continues to showcase his development into a formidable duelist. He is fiercely protective of his friends and confronts the film's threats with characteristic bravery, as seen when he refers to himself as the "Godfather of Games". His relationships are central to his character. His bond with Yugi Muto is the most important, acting as a source of mutual strength and inspiration. He shares a close friendship with Tristan Taylor and Téa Gardner. His relationship with Mai Valentine is complex and laced with unspoken romantic tension, and he has been shown to go to great lengths to save her. His rivalry with Seto Kaiba is intense and competitive, fueling his desire to improve and prove himself, and he is one of the few duelists capable of pushing Kaiba to his limits.

Throughout the series, Joey undergoes significant development, transforming from an inexperienced amateur to a duelist of remarkable skill. He learns the game from Yugi's grandfather and, through dedication, rises to become the runner-up in the Duelist Kingdom tournament. He continues to grow, developing his own unique dueling style that relies heavily on luck-based cards involving coin flips and dice. His progress is widely recognized; in the GX series, Pegasus even names him the third-best duelist in the world, surpassed only by Yugi and Kaiba.

Joey's notable abilities as a duelist are distinctive. He is famous for his incredible luck, frequently winning crucial games against the odds with chance-based cards like Time Wizard, Graceful Dice, and Skull Dice. His deck is predominantly composed of Warrior-type monsters, with his signature cards including the Flame Swordsman and the Red-Eyes Black Dragon, which he won from Rex Raptor and which becomes his soul card. Despite lacking a Millennium Item or immense wealth, his determination and growing strategic mind allow him to defeat powerful opponents and push legendary duelists to their very limits.
