Description
Kikyo, whose full name is Mikage Kikyo, is a character from the Marvel Anime universe, specifically the Earth-101001 timeline. She is a human mutant who works as a highly skilled assassin, though her primary motivation is not money or power but the pursuit of honorable combat. Her background is rooted in a disciplined past; she was taken in by a master swordsman named Yagyu Tanba, where she studied the way of the sword alongside another student, Eric Brooks, who would later become the vampire hunter known as Blade. Her relationship with Blade is complex, defined by a shared history and a deep-seated rivalry. Her time at the dojo ended when Tanba forced her to leave in order to experience the real world, a decision that would shape her path as a wandering warrior.

In the events of the Wolverine anime, Kikyo enters the story as an agent of the crime lord Yashida Shingen, hired to eliminate the protagonist, Wolverine. She is a formidable opponent, possessing abilities that mirror Logan's own. Like Wolverine, she has a potent accelerated healing factor and deadly retractable blades. However, instead of bone or adamantium claws, her forearms house retractable adamantium arm-swords that extend from the palms of her hands. She is also a master swordsman, capable of performing a technique known as the Wind Blade, which allows her to cut an opponent from a distance using air pressure.

Kikyo is not driven by blind loyalty to Shingen. Her primary motivation is to find and defeat worthy opponents, and she becomes fascinated with Wolverine after their first encounter. She is a character governed by a rigid and deeply personal code of honor. This sense of honor dictates her actions, often in ways that defy the expectations of her employers. She refuses to fight an opponent who is distracted or exhausted, deeming any victory under such circumstances to be dishonorable. Because of this, she will step aside to allow a wounded foe to recover or even turn on her allies if they use underhanded tactics like firearms, which she considers beneath a true warrior.

Throughout the Wolverine storyline, Kikyo evolves from a primary antagonist into a crucial ally. Her honor is tested when she witnesses the cruelty of Shingen and his underling, Hideki Kurohagi. The turning point occurs during a battle against a massive stone statue named Vadhaka, a creature that traditional weapons cannot harm. Seeing the creature kill an innocent young woman, Kikyo’s sense of justice compels her to join forces with Wolverine and Yukio. Combining their abilities, she and Wolverine defeat the giant, an act that leads to her formal dismissal from Shingen's service. After this, she fully commits to helping Wolverine, even going so far as to throw herself in the path of a poison dart meant for him, demonstrating that her bond with him has transcended their initial rivalry. Her journey does not end there, as she later appears in the Blade anime seeking revenge on the vampire Deacon Frost, who corrupted her former master, showing that her quest for honor and retribution is an ongoing part of her life.
