Description
Poala is a main character in Beet the Vandel Buster, introduced as the childhood friend of the protagonist Beet. She grew up in the village of Ankurusu, where her family ran an inn, and it was her family who took Beet in after his brother Zenon left him in their care. From an early age she acted as a steadying presence in Beet's life, watching over him and often being sharply critical of his reckless decisions, trying to make him think things through in a more reasonable way.
When Beet left the village to train as a Vandel Buster, Poala decided to become a Buster herself. Her motivations were practical and personal: she wanted to protect her hometown from the dangers that appeared during his absence, and she also became a Buster to earn money for her father's medical treatment. She later joined Beet on his journey, becoming the second member of the team known as the Beet Warriors.
In personality, Poala is tough, tomboyish, and willing to get involved directly in fights against Vandels. She is also the most level-headed member of the group: she prefers to plan before acting, does not understand how Beet can remain calm in life-threatening situations, and serves as a voice of practical common sense beside an unpredictable companion. Within the Beet Warriors she functions as the brains of the team, keeping detailed records in her diary and managing the group's finances, although she sometimes spends money on weapons she believes will help the group. She dislikes the rough conditions of Buster life, such as eating bugs or extended camping, which Beet treats as routine.
Her relationship with Beet is central to her character. Beet often introduces her as his future wife, which irritates her, but she has genuine feelings for him and becomes jealous when other women, such as Milfa, flirt with him. She cares deeply about her family and friends, and this loyalty grounds much of her decision-making.
As a fighter, Poala wields the Divine Power of fire, favoring fireball attacks. Early on she believed her fire attacks were weak because she doubted herself, until Kissu explained that her power was actually strong up close but lost force as it scattered over distance. She adapted by engaging enemies at close range. Her favored weapons are a pair of short swords and an armored gun mounted on her arm. Her strongest technique is the fire-based Divine Attack known as Burst End, which is fired at point-blank range and is powerful enough to destroy even very tough targets; she discovered it during a battle with the Vandel Grineed, where it completely destroyed one of the Vandel's arms. She has not yet manifested a saiga, the ultimate weapon a Buster can create.
In terms of development, Poala grows from a protective village girl into a capable and resourceful member of the Beet Warriors. During a later confrontation with the Vandel Baron, she is gravely wounded by his baptism attack, which misses her heart by only a small margin, and she spends time recovering from this near-fatal injury. Throughout the story she remains the grounded, responsible counterpart to Beet's reckless heroism, balancing the team with her caution, loyalty, and readiness to fight when circumstances demand it.
