Description
Meiren is a character who appears exclusively in the anime adaptation of Dance in the Vampire Bund. She is a young weretiger, a type of therianthrope, belonging to the Forest Clan, which distinguishes her from the werewolves of the Earth clan. Her creation for the anime serves as a replacement for a different character from the original manga, Seiji Hama, as she assumes the narrative role he occupied in the source material.

In appearance, Meiren is a teenage girl with black hair and distinctive yellow eyes. Her personality is marked by a notable lack of shame, and it is implied that she does not wear undergarments. She is most frequently seen consuming hard candies, which she crunches audibly rather than sucking on them. This habit is a defining character trait, and the candies themselves carry significant narrative weight, serving as a symbol of her loyalty. Meiren claims her physical measurements are 32-23-33 and states that she is a virgin. She wears a replica pendant around her neck as a reminder of a precious friend from her past, a person whom Akira eventually remembers.

Meiren's role in the story is complex and initially shrouded in mystery. She becomes one of the three assassins, taking the position previously held by Seiji Hama, due to her proficiency with a shotgun, a weapon she wields with a technique similar to his. Her true motives are ambiguous for much of the narrative; while she appears to be loyal to the vampire princess Mina Tepes, this is revealed to be a deception. In the final episode, it is disclosed that she is actually a follower of a look-alike false Mina who is the leader of an organization called Telomere. The hard candies she constantly eats were originally thought to have been given to her by the real Mina, but this is also revealed to be false, further tying her to the impostor.

Throughout the series, Meiren is a figure of contradictions, both aiding and opposing the protagonists. She shows a clear interest in Akira, helping him on several occasions. Her actions suggest she has romantic feelings for him, and her interactions with him are a central part of her character arc. Her relationship with Akira is key to her development, culminating in a final confrontation between them. In their last fight, Akira kills Meiren. However, she dies happily, expressing that she never thought she would be able to die in someone's arms after having been alone for so long. Her death is portrayed as a moment of tragic significance, providing a resolution to her loneliness and conflicted loyalties.

In terms of abilities, Meiren is a skilled combatant. Beyond her proficiency with a shotgun, she also uses her hard candies as projectile weapons, flicking them with enough force to strike with the power of bullets. As a weretiger, she is a member of a supernatural race, which grants her inherent physical abilities and allows her to transform into a beast form. Her role and fate are unique to the anime, making her a distinctive figure whose narrative arc is independent from the manga's storyline.
