Description
Hysterica, whose real name is Francesca, is a vampire who appears as a significant antagonist in the third volume of the manga. Her origin is directly tied to Vera, Mina Tepes’s trusted advisor and bodyguard. Nearly one hundred years before the main story, Francesca was a human friend of Vera, who was then known as Veratos. When Francesca’s family was wiped out by the Spanish flu, leaving her on the verge of death, Vera turned her into a vampire to save her life. For a time, the two were very close, with some implications that they were lovers in their early days as immortals.

Eventually, however, Hysterica left Vera and resurfaced under a new name, having severed ties with Mina’s court and allied herself with opposing forces. Her personality is marked by cruelty and a sense of superiority, particularly evident in her habit of referring to the people she manipulates as pigs. This derogatory language reflects her willingness to treat others as disposable tools to achieve her objectives.

Hysterica’s primary motivation is to destabilize Mina Tepes’s rule and throw Tokyo into chaos on behalf of a terrorist organization known as the Third Kind, which in the anime adaptation is called Telomere. She orchestrates a plot using a small army of vampires as unwitting suicide bombers. Her method involves implanting a special chemical ampoule close to the heart of her victims. When she sends a signal from a mobile phone, the chemical mixes with the vampire’s blood, causing a violent and fatal explosion. Her pawns include Nanami, a student council president who was recently turned into a vampire, demonstrating Hysterica’s willingness to exploit even the newly turned and innocent.

While she is a formidable and cunning threat, her most defining role in the story is tied to her past with Vera. As she carries out her attacks, Hysterica is also driven by a desire to report crucial information about Mina’s true powers back to her masters. However, this obsession becomes her undoing. During a confrontation, Hysterica becomes momentarily distracted after witnessing one of Mina’s alternate forms, as she is desperate to contact her superiors with the discovery. This fatal hesitation allows Nanami, whose mind has been freed from Hysterica’s control, to turn on her and stab her with a weapon. Ultimately, it is Vera who delivers the killing blow, in a deeply personal act of betrayal. She hurls one of Hysterica’s own chemical ampoules into the open wound, causing her to burn alive from the inside. In her final moments, Hysterica looks at Vera and utters her last, condemning words, Liar, you said we would be together forever, highlighting that her true, tragic motivation was a longing for the bond they once shared.

In terms of abilities, aside from the standard vampiric traits of strength and longevity, Hysterica’s notable power lies not in combat but in psychological manipulation and advanced chemical terrorism. She creates her own suicide bombers and exerts a controlling, almost BDSM-like influence over her enslaved pawns, making her a threat that operates from the shadows rather than on the front lines. Her appearance is distinctive, with long, slicked-back maroon hair, gold-yellow eyes, and matching earrings, which gives her a sharp and predatory look.
