TV-Series
Description
Daitetsu Kunikida is the director of the Terrestrial Administration Center, a covert government agency established to defend Japan from the Aragami, monstrous plant-based creatures. A native of Tokyo, he is a middle-aged man with black hair and black eyes, presenting a rugged and often gruff exterior that belies a deeply caring and sentimental nature.
His personal history is profoundly shaped by his role as the adoptive father of Kaede Kunikida, one of twin heirs to the Kushinada bloodline. The Kushinada is a figure from Japanese mythology whose modern heir possesses a unique ability: upon her death, her blood can create a field that forces all Aragami into dormancy, making her a critical last-resort weapon. After the twins were separated at birth, Kunikida raised Kaede as his own daughter, but he tragically exploited her powers to track and fight the Aragami. Her subsequent disappearance and presumed death left him devastated and haunted by guilt, fueling his determination to protect the surviving twin, Momiji Fujimiya, from a similar fate.
As the series progresses, Momiji’s grandmother grants Kunikida custody of her, and he brings her to Tokyo. His primary motivation becomes reconciling his patriotic duty to safeguard Japan with a personal vow to prevent the sacrifice of an innocent girl. He is dedicated to finding an alternative method to stop the Aragami that does not require the Kushinada's death. This internal conflict between duty and morality reaches its climax when the Japanese government seizes Momiji to use her as a human sacrifice. In a decisive act of defiance, Kunikida rebels against his superiors and rescues her, marking a definitive shift from rigid obedience to ethical leadership.
Within the story, Kunikida serves as the commander and moral compass of the TAC team. His leadership is supported by his extensive military expertise, law enforcement training, and powerful connections within the government. He has a notable but poor sense of humor, believing himself to be funny in a way that others do not always appreciate. His key relationships evolve significantly over time. He develops a growing paternal devotion to Momiji, moving away from the exploitative dynamic he had with her twin sister and instead choosing to mentor and protect her as a surrogate daughter. He also shares a close professional bond with his subordinate, the agent Ryouko Takeuchi, a relationship that gradually matures from mutual professionalism into romance, with Kunikida initially being unaware of her affections. In the OVA continuation set two years after the main series, Kunikida continues to confront new Aragami threats while upholding his core principles of defending Japan and protecting the innocent.
