Description
Kaede Fujimiya, also known as Kaede Kunikida after her adoption, is the paternal twin sister of Momiji Fujimiya from the anime Blue Seed. Separated from her sister at birth for their mutual protection, Kaede was raised by Daitetsu Kunikida, the director of the Terrestrial Administration Center (TAC). She is the designated Princess Kushinada, a role that grants her special abilities to sense and combat the monstrous Aragami.

Kaede is characterized as a refined, mature, intelligent, and graceful young woman, serving as a deliberate antithesis to her more energetic and impulsive twin sister, Momiji. Despite her composed exterior, she experiences significant psychological distress stemming from her role. Initially, she takes her responsibilities as the Kushinada very seriously, with her lineage granting her unique capabilities. As a Barrier Maiden, her blood can create protective wards, and her death possesses the theoretical potential to unleash a massive energy wave capable of sealing all Aragami in Japan for centuries.

Kaede’s motivations are shaped by growing disillusionment with the TAC, which she comes to view as treating her not as a person but as a tool for combating the Aragami. This feeling of being exploited, including being subjected to experimental procedures, fuels a deep bitterness and a desire to find her own meaning beyond her prescribed duty. Her search leads her to distance herself from the TAC and her family, culminating in her mysterious disappearance in a bright pillar of light at the outset of the story.

Her role in the narrative evolves dramatically when she reappears in Tokyo, having allied herself with the antagonist Murakumo. Together, they plan to resurrect the god Susanoo to purge humanity's destructive influence and restore the balance of nature. This transforms her into a well-intentioned extremist, willing to sacrifice human lives to achieve what she sees as a greater ecological good.

Key relationships define Kaede's arc. Her adoptive father, Daitetsu Kunikida, is a central figure; his exploitation of her abilities creates lasting trauma, though he comes to regret his actions after her apparent death. She was formerly protected by Mamoru Kusanagi, who developed a deep loyalty to her. After her disappearance, Kusanagi struggles to reconcile his past devotion to Kaede with his new bond to her sister, Momiji, and initially seeks to kill Momiji to fulfill the Kushinada's sacrificial role before changing his allegiance. Her relationship with Momiji is complex; as twins, they are polar opposites, yet Kaede's presence and actions continuously haunt Momiji's journey.

Throughout the series, Kaede undergoes significant development, moving from a dutiful princess to a disillusioned antagonist, and finally toward a path of atonement. Her character arc concludes with a sacrificial redemption. After her plan is thwarted, she achieves spiritual resolution by entering a dormant state alongside Susanoo, effectively removing herself from the conflict and symbolically atoning for her actions. Among her notable abilities, her blood serves as a potent weapon against the Aragami, she can sense their presence, and she acts as a vessel capable of communing with or supporting the god Susanoo.
