Description
Motoharu Yano is a high school student and the male protagonist of the story. He is known for his popularity among classmates, predominantly because of his charm and flirtatious demeanor. He often appears cool, carefree, and detached, which leads others to describe him as someone who smiles carelessly. Beneath this exterior, however, lies a deeply troubled individual shaped by painful experiences.

His background is marked by two significant losses. First, his ex-girlfriend, Nana Yamamoto, died in a car accident. Because she was with her former boyfriend at the time of the crash, Yano suspects she may have been unfaithful, and the unresolved guilt and mistrust from that event linger in him. Later in the story, his mother, Yoko, dies by suicide after a period of mental instability, an event Yano blames himself for. These traumas create in him a profound difficulty in trusting women and a persistent fear of abandonment. He tends to avoid discussing his emotions and instead hides behind a facade of nonchalance.

His primary motivation is a desire for genuine emotional connection, even as he struggles to open up. He strongly wishes for someone to stay by his side and not leave him, a sentiment he expresses directly. His relationship with Nanami Takahashi becomes the central focus of his emotional journey. He initially refers to her by her surname, Takahashi, and their relationship goes through many ups and downs as he learns to confront his past, communicate his feelings, and allow himself to be vulnerable. Throughout the series, he transitions from a casually flirtatious boy into a more introspective and earnest young man.

Key relationships include his bond with Nanami, which serves as both the anchor and the challenge for his growth; his deceased ex-girlfriend Nana, whose memory haunts him; his mother Yoko, whose death deepens his sense of guilt and isolation; Yuri Yamamoto, Nana’s younger sister with whom he becomes involved out of a misplaced sense of duty; and his best friend Masafumi Takeuchi, who later becomes a romantic rival for Nanami’s affections but also serves as a supportive figure.

In terms of abilities, Yano does not possess any supernatural or combat skills. His strengths are social and emotional: he is charismatic, naturally draws people to him, and has a keen understanding of others’ feelings, even when he struggles to manage his own. His emotional depth, rather than any physical prowess, defines his narrative role. Over the course of the story, he demonstrates growth in his capacity for trust, honesty, and commitment, ultimately learning to face his past and build a stable, loving relationship.
