Ako Ōzora is a sixth-grade student at Yamazakura Elementary School and serves as the central protagonist of the series. Among her friends and classmates, she is often called by the nickname Anko.

In terms of personality, Ako has a sober and introverted nature, which means she does not typically stand out much at school. While she claims to dislike scary stories, she possesses a strong sense of curiosity that makes it impossible for her to ignore a mystery or supernatural occurrence. She is not a fanatic about ghost stories but never refuses to listen to one, particularly because she is interested in the moral or lesson that the story conveys. Despite her usual timidity, she has a determined and aspiring side, as she hopes to become a novelist when she grows up.

Ako's role in the story is largely defined by her involvement with supernatural happenings in her town. She experiences a wide range of bizarre and life-threatening events, often alongside her classmates. A key part of her character involves her relationship with Shō Komoto, a transfer student who becomes her friend and with whom she begins to develop romantic feelings over time. She is generally the first person to become friends with Shō after he moves to Yamazakura. Ako also has a brother named Bunta.

A notable and unique ability, or rather quirk, of Ako involves her pink glasses. Under normal circumstances, she is frightened by ghosts and spends most of her time screaming and running away from them. However, if her glasses are removed, her demeanor changes completely. Without them, she is effectively blind and cannot see the terrifying entities around her. In this state, she ignores the supernatural threats and focuses entirely on finding her lost glasses, rendering her fearless and effectively the strongest character in the series in that specific situation.
