Description
Mashymre Cello is a Neo Zeon officer who serves as captain of the Endra-class cruiser Endra during the First Neo Zeon War in the Universal Century timeline. He is introduced as a mobile suit pilot and commander for the Side 1 Area Army. Mashymre’s background begins with his first meeting with Haman Karn, when she defeated him in a mobile suit simulation battle that he had been winning. This encounter left a profound impression and sparked an obsessive devotion to her. During a public parade on the asteroid Moussa, he ran after Haman’s car and gave her a rose, an act that became emblematic of his personality. Haman later returned a preserved rose to him, which Mashymre wore on his chest at all times, having it specially coated to prevent it from withering.
Personality-wise, Mashymre is characterized by intense, almost obsessive devotion to Haman Karn. He possesses a chivalrous nature and romantic idealism, often adhering to an outdated code of honor that sometimes compromises his tactical effectiveness. He is initially optimistic, naive, and prone to theatrical gestures, serving as comic relief among his crew. His narcissistic tendencies and desire to present himself as a noble knight occasionally interfere with his battlefield performance. However, as the war progresses and he experiences repeated defeats, particularly at the hands of Judau Ashta and the AEUG crew of the Argama, his personality darkens. He largely abandons his earlier pacifistic and idealistic concepts, adopting a colder, more ruthless outlook while maintaining his unwavering loyalty to Haman. This shift is suggested by other characters to be the result of psychological conditioning and attempts to turn him into a Cyber Newtype.
Motivations are driven entirely by his devotion to Haman. He views his military service as a personal crusade to prove his worth to her and sees her as an object of romantic veneration. His actions, from leading mobile suit operations to the devastating colony drop on Dublin, are all performed in her name. His final motivation is to fight against the rebel forces of Glemy Toto, whom he sees as traitors to both the Zeon cause and to Haman personally.
In the story, Mashymre is the primary antagonist in the early part of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. He commands the Endra and leads multiple operations against the AEUG. After a series of defeats, command of the Endra is transferred to Chara Soon, marking a significant turning point. He reappears later as the officer responsible for the colony drop on Dublin, a major escalation in the conflict. During the Neo Zeon civil war, he fights for Haman at the Battle of Axis. In his final battle, piloting the AMX-011S Zaku III Custom, he engages Ple Two’s Queen Mansa and then is cornered by a team of Döven Wolf units led by Rakan Dahkaran. Overwhelmed, he displays impressive Newtype powers and detonates his mobile suit, shouting a final declaration of loyalty to Haman. His sacrifice destroys one enemy unit and damages others, but Haman coldly remarks that his death merely reduces her available resources by one.
Key relationships are defined by his obsession with Haman Karn, which is entirely one-sided. Haman views him purely as a military asset and remains indifferent to his feelings. Chara Soon replaces him as captain of the Endra; their relationship is tense due to her erratic personality contrasting with his romantic idealism. He holds strong animosity toward Glemy Toto, viewing him as a traitor, and fights fiercely against his faction at the end. He shares a professional relationship with fellow young officer Illia Pazom within Neo Zeon’s hierarchy.
Development is one of the clearest arcs in the series. He begins as a relatively lighthearted, chivalrous if inept antagonist, then transforms into a grim, uncompromising soldier willing to commit atrocities such as the colony drop. His psychological deterioration is likely accelerated by artificial enhancements intended to boost his Newtype abilities, which may have contributed to his mental instability. His final act of sacrificial detonation represents both the peak of his Newtype power and the tragic culmination of his unrequited devotion.
Notable abilities include skilled mobile suit piloting and competent leadership as a cruiser captain, though his tactical decisions are sometimes undermined by his romantic idealism. He develops Cyber Newtype abilities over the course of the war, possibly through conditioning. These abilities are most dramatically displayed in his final battle, where he demonstrates enhanced spatial awareness, improved reaction times, and the capacity to sense enemy intentions. His signature mobile suit is the AMX-011S Zaku III Custom, which features heavier and stylized armor, a custom head with vulcan guns, optional shoulder armor with a hide bomb dispenser, a large backpack with powerful thrusters, and an oversized rear skirt armor. The modifications reflect both practical needs and his preference for dramatic visual impact.
