Description
Mashymre Cello is a Neo Zeon officer introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. He serves as the captain of the Endra-class cruiser Endra and later commands other vessels, often leading mobile suit operations against the AEUG. His background begins when he first meets Haman Karn, the regent of Neo Zeon, after she defeats him in a mobile suit simulation. This encounter sparks an intense, obsessive devotion to her that defines his entire character. During a public parade on the asteroid Moussa, Mashymre runs after Haman's car and presents her with a rose. She later gives him a preserved rose, which he coats in a special varnish so it never withers and always wears it on his chest, even in battle.

In the early part of the story, Mashymre is portrayed as a chivalrous and overly romantic young man who sees himself as a knight serving a noble lady. He adheres to an outdated code of honor, avoiding cowardly tactics, and often behaves in a theatrical, narcissistic manner. His extreme admiration for Haman frequently leads to comedic moments, such as blushing and entering a trance when recalling her words. He is also known for his impulsive crush on Fa Yuiry, whom he calls "Angel," and his earnest but ineffective attempts to capture the Argama. These traits make him a source of comic relief among his crew, though his dedication never wavers.

Mashymre's role in the story is that of a recurring antagonist who directly opposes Judau Ashta and the Argama crew. He pilots several mobile suits, including the Galluss-J, Zssa, Hamma Hamma, and later the Zaku III Custom. He manages to destroy the Zeta Gundam's head but is ultimately thwarted by the introduction of the ZZ Gundam. After a series of defeats, command of the Endra is transferred to Chara Soon, marking a major turning point.

Following his demotion, Mashymre undergoes psychological conditioning and enhancement to become a Cyber Newtype. He reappears later in the series with a drastically altered personality: colder, more ruthless, and emotionally unstable. He carries out the devastating Dublin Colony Drop, a massive military operation that kills countless civilians. Although he becomes more calculating and brutal, he still retains a remnant of his former self; after the colony drop, he gives his preserved rose to his subordinate Illia Pazom, feeling he no longer deserves it.

During the Neo Zeon civil war between Haman's faction and Glemy Toto's rebel forces, Mashymre fights fiercely for Haman. He pilots the Zaku III Custom in a final battle against Ple Two's Queen Mansa and later against Rakan Dahkaran's Döven Wolf team. Despite being overwhelmed by superior technology, Mashymre displays tremendous Newtype powers, including enhanced spatial awareness and the ability to generate a protective barrier. In a desperate move, he detonates his mobile suit's reactor, shouting "Long live Lady Haman!" as his final words, destroying one Döven Wolf and heavily damaging others. Haman coldly dismisses his sacrifice as the loss of a single resource, highlighting the tragic one-sidedness of his devotion.

Key relationships include his unrequited love for Haman, who views him only as a tool; his rivalry with Chara Soon, who replaces him as captain; his hatred for Glemy Toto, whom he sees as a traitor; and his professional bond with Illia Pazom, who serves as his minder after his enhancement. Mashymre's development from an idealistic, laughable knight into a broken, fanatical soldier reflects the corrupting influence of war and the futility of blind loyalty. His notable abilities lie in his mobile suit piloting skills, his leadership competence, and his artificially enhanced Cyber Newtype powers, which allow him to fight at an almost superhuman level in his final moments.
