Description
Kakeru Satsuki is a seventeen-year-old second-year student at虹陵馆学园. He is an orphan who spent his early childhood at Ayame Garden, an orphanage, alongside his older sister, Kukuri Satsuki, and his close friend, Yuka Minase. Born with heterochromia, his right eye is golden while his left is blue, a condition that has rendered that eye blind from birth, which he conceals with an eyepatch.
The defining tragedy of Kakeru’s life occurred when his sister, Kukuri, died by suicide several years before the story begins. This event shattered any hope he had for the future. After this loss, he became emotionally withdrawn, listless, and deeply pessimistic. He developed a fear of forming close relationships, believing they would only lead to further pain. For a long time, he lived without purpose, feeling a profound emptiness inside. Much of his stability during this period came from the unwavering support of his childhood friend, Yuka, who remained by his side and helped him return to a semblance of normal daily life.
Although he managed to recover enough to function at school and work a part-time job at a cafe called Trattoria Tiberiader, he remained disconnected and uninterested in the world around him. This outlook begins to change when he and Yuka are pulled into the Red Night, a dark, desolate alternate reality where dangerous creatures called Larvae and the powerful Black Knights exist. Initially, he is helpless, but after witnessing others fight to protect him, his desire to protect Yuka and his new companions grows stronger, gradually overriding his trauma and apathy. This marks the start of his maturation into a more determined and mentally strong individual.

This eye grants him the power of precognition, allowing him to see his opponent’s next move seconds before it happens. In truth, its power is far greater, enabling him to access the memories, skills, and experiences of all its previous bearers and even to alter fate by manifesting a desired future. However, using this power comes with a heavy price; overuse risks his own soul being absorbed into the eye. To fight effectively, he learns swordsmanship from his upperclassman, Misuzu Kusakabe, who also provides him with a blade called Raikiri and shares her own oni blood to amplify his strength.
