Description
Kanami Ishizaki is a scientist who served as the head staff member at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Her primary role involves monitoring Contractors and Dolls as part of a government-affiliated surveillance network. She is approximately twenty-seven years old during the events of the first season and thirty by the time of the second. She shares a long personal history with Misaki Kirihara, as the two attended high school together along with a mutual friend named Alice Wang. This friendship is the most significant relationship in her life, making her a confidante for Misaki outside of the high-pressure world of intelligence and police work.

Kanami has a carefree and relaxed personality, which often contrasts with the more serious and duty-bound demeanor of her best friend. She is also a smoker, a habit that Misaki frequently criticizes due to her own dislike of smoke and strict adherence to rules. Her appearance is distinctive, featuring wavy, medium-length light brown hair that she usually keeps tied up in a short ponytail with two bangs framing her face, along with brown eyes and pink lipstick. She prefers to wear revealing clothing, a fashion choice that Misaki also disapproves of.

In the story, Kanami primarily functions as an ally and emotional support for Misaki. Her position at the observatory grants her access to valuable information and resources, which she uses to assist her friend’s investigations. For instance, she hacks into the servers of the powerful organization PANDORA to scan a building and provide Misaki with a covert entry point. Following the decision to shut down the Doll system used for surveillance, she resigns from her post at the observatory. During this conversation, she reveals her desire to distance herself from the dangerous phenomena of Hell's Gate and Contractors, stating that she is considering accepting a job offer at an observatory in Hawaii to live as far away as possible. She also teases Misaki about the contractor known as Hei, before reassuring her friend after hearing about her struggles. Later, she discusses the disappearance of the star associated with BK-201, Hei's contractor designation, and advises Misaki to forget about him and find another man. Kanami does not possess any supernatural abilities or contractor powers, relying instead on her scientific expertise and resourcefulness. Her personal development is subtle, marked by her decision to leave a career tied to the dangerous world of Contractors in pursuit of a more peaceful, ordinary life.
