Description
Gai Kurasawa, originally named Gai Matsukichi, is a private detective operating in Tokyo. His career as a police officer ended in frustration, leading him to resign and establish his own independent detective agency in an effort to escape the restrictive methods of conventional law enforcement. He now runs the Kurasawa Detective Agency, where he is perpetually on the brink of financial ruin and often accepts any case that comes his way, no matter how trivial or odd.

In personality, Kurasawa is a cynical heavy smoker, claiming that cigarettes are the only thing he genuinely loves. He often describes Tokyo as a stagnant and rotting city, frequently expressing that its gloomy weather suits his pessimistic view of the world. Despite his exaggerated, clumsy, and seemingly clueless demeanor, he is highly observant and employs extremely unorthodox methods to solve his cases. He has several notable quirks, including an intense phobia of cats that can make him physically ill, and he suffers from athlete's foot. He can also be somewhat chauvinistic, particularly in his interactions with his assistant.

His primary motivation is survival and the desire to maintain his independence as a detective, free from the bureaucratic constraints of the police force. While he puts on the air of a hard-boiled, world-weary investigator, he is often driven by his need to pay bills, leading him to take on seemingly unimportant jobs like searching for a lost cat. Within the larger story, Kurasawa serves as a recurring supporting character who often provides comic relief. He operates on the fringes of the main plot, frequently stumbling upon or crossing paths with the primary protagonist, Hei, but he remains blissfully unaware of the true nature of the dangerous conspiracies involving Contractors and the Gates. His investigations, such as a case involving a missing cat and a series of suspicious suicides, often intersect with Hei's missions, though Kurasawa misinterprets these encounters as routine detective work.

His most significant relationship is with his assistant, Kiko Kayanuma. The pair bicker constantly, with Kurasawa often complaining about her demands and her flat-chested figure, while Kiko is primarily motivated to work for him because he allows her to watch anime in the office. Despite their squabbling, they function as a team, with Kiko often providing the common sense that Kurasawa lacks. He also has a peripheral and largely one-sided awareness of Hei, whom he sees as a suspicious but mysterious figure who eats a lot, never realizing that Hei is a powerful Contractor codenamed the Black Reaper.

Regarding development, Kurasawa is a largely static character whose primary purpose is to act as a parody of classic noir detectives. While he does not undergo a dramatic transformation, he consistently demonstrates that behind his bumbling and financially desperate exterior lies a competent and observant detective with a strong sense of intuition. He is capable of solving the human-centric crimes he investigates, even if the larger supernatural elements of his world remain a mystery to him. His notable abilities are not supernatural but stem from his observational skills and his unconventional approach to detective work, which allows him to see details that others might overlook.
