Description
Juushirou Ukitake appears in Bleach the Movie: Memories of Nobody as the captain of the 13th Division in the Gotei 13. In the film, he is distinguished by his long white hair and a calm, gentle demeanor, though he also projects the quiet authority expected of a captain. His physical appearance, marked by his uniquely colored hair, is a result of a chronic respiratory illness he has suffered from since birth, a condition that often leaves him frail but does not define his strength of character.
In Memories of Nobody, Ukitake's motivations are driven by his sense of duty to protect the balance between the world of the living and the Soul Society. When the mysterious Shinenju, a girl named Senna, appears and threatens to cause a catastrophic collision between the two realms, Ukitake acts as part of the official response. He is seen arriving in the human world alongside other high-ranking officers, including Rukia Kuchiki, Renji Abarai, Tōshirō Hitsugaya, and Soifon. Their primary objective is to take Senna into custody to prevent the disaster her existence represents. His role in the story is therefore that of a senior leader executing the will of the Soul Society's central command, though he approaches the mission with his characteristic thoughtfulness.
Regarding key relationships within the film, Ukitake’s interactions are largely professional, focusing on his fellow captains and his subordinates. He has a long-standing friendship with Shunsui Kyōraku, the captain of the 8th Division, a bond built on mutual respect and shared experience since their academy days; this friendship informs his supportive and cooperative nature when acting alongside his peers. As the captain of the 13th Division, he is deeply protective of his squad members. This protective instinct is a core part of his personality and would extend to any subordinate in a dangerous situation, including those involved in the mission of the movie. His character development is not a primary focus of this particular film, as he serves in a supporting capacity within the larger ensemble cast, but his actions are consistent with his established nature as an honorable, just, and fundamentally compassionate leader who is not afraid to challenge authority for the sake of what is right.
As a captain, Ukitake possesses immense spiritual power, or reiatsu. While the film does not focus heavily on his combat abilities, he is recognized as a powerful and skilled fighter capable of standing alongside the strongest characters in the Soul Society. His signature ability is wielded through his Zanpakutō, named Sōgyo no Kotowari, which has the unique power to absorb an enemy's energy attack and redirect it back at them, making him a formidable defensive and counteractive force. Even though Memories of Nobody does not provide a showcase for his full power, his very presence as a captain in the mission indicates that the situation is of the highest priority and that his strength is a necessary asset for the Gotei 13.
