Movie
Description
Ganryuu is the primary antagonist from the first film in the series. He serves as the leader of a group known as the Dark Ones, who appear in Karakura Town to cause chaos. His origins lie in a deep-seated grudge against the Soul Society, as he was once a member of the Ryōdoji Family, a clan that was exiled from the Soul Society a thousand years before the events of the movie. Forced to reside in the precarious Dangai, the space between the human world and the Soul Society, Ganryuu and his clan eventually discovered a place called the Valley of Screams. There, they found the Blanks, which are lost souls without memories, and learned to harness them as a source of power.

In terms of personality, Ganryuu is typically calm and observant, often watching battles unfold without fear or concern for his subordinates. He is arrogant and dismissive, showing no regard for formalities or manners, as he views them as irrelevant distractions from his objectives. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a profound bitterness and hatred. Driven by the suffering his clan endured during their exile, he is utterly determined to destroy the Soul Society at any cost, regarding revenge as his only reason to survive.

Ganryuu's primary motivation is to exact vengeance on the Soul Society for the unjust exile of his family. His role in the story is to act as the mastermind behind the plot to use the Shinenju, the condensed memories of the Blanks, which has taken the physical form of a young Shinigami named Senna. He plans to use Senna as a tool to draw the human world and the Soul Society into a collision that would annihilate both, thereby achieving his revenge. Throughout the film, he leads the Dark Ones in ambushes against the Gotei 13 and directly confronts the protagonist. His key relationship is his adversarial one with Ichigo Kurosaki, whom he nearly defeats on their first encounter, seeing Ichigo's determination to protect Senna as a foolish attachment to a mere object. He also acts as the leader of his followers, Jai and Mue, though his arrogance suggests he holds little regard for them beyond their utility.

Throughout the movie, Ganryuu does not undergo a significant change of heart or redemption. He remains a staunch and bitter villain until the end. His development is shown more through the revelation of his tragic backstory, which explains the source of his hatred but does not excuse his cruel actions. He refuses to see Senna as a living person with feelings, insisting she is just an object of memories. In his final battle against Ichigo, he releases all of his spiritual power, but is ultimately cut down by Ichigo's full-force attack, dissolving into nothing as the Valley of Screams collapses.

Ganryuu possesses a number of notable abilities that make him a formidable foe comparable to a Soul Reaper captain. He has immense spiritual power, having absorbed a large quantity of Blanks, which allows him to match the speed and power of an opponent using Bankai without possessing a Zanpakutou of his own. He is an expert in Shunpo, the flash step technique, enabling him to effortlessly keep up with high-speed combat. He is also a highly skilled swordsman, wielding a concealed spear and other blades to overwhelm his enemies. Like his subordinates, he can manipulate Blanks for various purposes, such as creating adhesive masses to restrain opponents or forming projectiles. He also demonstrates a form of invisibility, allowing him to hide in plain sight while taunting his enemies. Finally, his physical strength is remarkable, as he is able to incapacitate Senna with a single blow and impale Ichigo with a mere flick of his wrist.
