Description
Kagari Izuriha is a central character from the 2012 anime, recognized by her other self, Chariot. She is a childhood friend of Yomi Takanashi, and their shared past is the source of her deep-seated emotional trauma. As a young girl, Kagari was extremely devoted to Yomi. When Yomi's family moved overseas for a few years due to her father's work, Kagari chased after their car on foot and was hit by a vehicle. Although doctors found no physical damage, Kagari lost the use of her legs, a paralysis rooted in psychological trauma rather than any physiological cause. This event cemented a powerful sense of guilt in Yomi, who felt responsible for Kagari's condition.
Kagari's personality is defined by her intense, possessive obsession with Yomi. Initially presented as a girl who never attends school and spends her days in a white sleeping gown, she resides in the Takanashi household and exerts a controlling influence over her friend. Kagari forbids Yomi from making any other friends, declaring that Yomi belongs to her and must take responsibility for her. She is outwardly beautiful, with long, messy blonde hair, but can be extremely cruel and manipulative. Her speech is notably sharp and venomous, earning her a reputation for being a "sugar and spice" type character. Kagari uses psychological warfare to maintain her grip on Yomi, even going so far as to carve a heart-shaped scar into her own chest with a crochet needle to prove a point or threaten to throw herself down a flight of stairs when she feels she is losing control. She has a strong dislike for the protagonist, Mato Kuroi, who she sees as a threat to her relationship with Yomi, and communicates through a doll named Mary to deliver harsh messages. Her fondness for macarons is a recurring character trait.
Kagari's primary role in the story is that of an antagonist whose unhealthy attachment to Yomi serves as the main source of conflict in the early narrative. She is responsible for Yomi's isolation and unhappiness, directly opposing Mato's efforts to befriend her. The turning point for Kagari occurs when her other self, Chariot, is beheaded by Black Rock Shooter in the otherworld. This event severs the emotional link between Kagari and Yomi, causing her obsessive feelings to vanish. Consequently, the psychosomatic paralysis in her legs disappears, and she is able to stand and walk for the first time. Freed from her pain and obsession, Kagari's personality transforms. She begins attending school where her sharp tongue is perceived as amusing and charming by her classmates, making her a popular figure. She becomes independent, excels academically, and joins the cooking club to learn how to make sweets, a skill she develops to repay Yomi for caring for her all those years. After Chariot is later revived, Kagari regains her memories of her deep affection for Yomi and, by the story's conclusion, successfully establishes a healthy friendship with both Yomi and Mato.
In the otherworld, Kagari's counterpart, Chariot, possesses formidable combat abilities. Chariot fights while riding a massive mechanical spider tank, which she uses for crushing and ramming attacks. The tank can also launch gigantic pastries that have significant projectile force. When fighting on foot, Chariot wields a large wheel-like shield that can emit a barrage of thick steel needles for both offensive and defensive purposes. Her legs are shaped like sharp wheels, granting her high mobility in combat. She is also capable of using chains to bind her opponents, most notably Dead Master, Yomi's other self. It is this version of Kagari that is decapitated by Black Rock Shooter before her body is thrown into an abyss by Strength, symbolizing the death of her obsessive nature. Her other self’s eventual revival coincides with Kagari in the real world reclaiming her lost memories and feelings, leading to the final reconciliation between the three friends.
