Description
Arata Kohata is a character from the 2012 anime Black Rock Shooter, where she serves as a supporting character and a classmate of the protagonist, Mato Kuroi. A second-year student, she is the captain of the school's basketball club and is often referred to by her nickname, Kohachi. Her appearance is that of a teenage girl with brown eyes and brown hair that is typically styled into short pigtails. Her usual attire is the red school gym uniform, which has her name written across the chest, paired with white shoes that have blue stripes. Her casual look is so consistently sporty that she is rarely seen in a standard school uniform until near the end of the series.

In terms of personality, Arata is characterized as cheerful, hyperactive, bold, and tomboyish. She is serious and disciplined when it comes to basketball, pushing her teammates hard during practice and being confident enough to declare that no one can beat her in a one-on-one game. Despite her outward confidence and tendency to brush off embarrassing situations, she harbors deep insecurities. She has a crush on a boy named Taku and initially struggles with confessing her feelings, even jokingly blaming her reluctance on not having a large chest like the school counselor, Saya Irino. A core aspect of her personality is a unique philosophy regarding blame and responsibility. She believes that if a problem is caused by someone else, it is something she cannot fix, so she tends to blame herself for misfortunes rather than holding others accountable.

Arata's primary role in the story is as the captain who recognizes Mato's talent for basketball and pushes her to improve. Her personal storyline becomes a focus in the third episode, where she writes a love letter to Taku. After she gives him the letter, it is publicly posted on a school bulletin board, making her the subject of ridicule. Though she initially acts as if she is unaffected, she visits the school counselor, Saya. Instead of offering comfort, Saya's words plant seeds of doubt and despair in her mind. This emotional turmoil causes her to become distracted during basketball practice, leading to an accident where she twists her ankle. As her emotional distress peaks, her counterpart in the alternate world—a small, fearful, hooded figure created by Black Gold Saw—is beheaded by Black Rock Shooter. This event causes her to lose consciousness and, upon waking, she has forgotten all her painful feelings associated with the incident, including her affection for Taku. When Taku later tries to apologize and return her feelings, she rejects him, no longer recognizing him as the object of her previous affections. By the final episode, after the defeat of Insane Black Rock Shooter, her other self is revived. Consequently, Arata regains her memories and feelings, and she successfully begins dating Taku, appearing happier and dressed more neatly in her school uniform.

Arata's key relationships are with her basketball club members, particularly Mato, whom she mentors. Her most significant relationship is with Taku, the boy she loves. Her interactions with the school counselor, Saya, are also crucial, as Saya's manipulation directly triggers her emotional breakdown. Her counterpart in the alternate world is a nameless, cloaked figure who is characterized by fear and trembling, reflecting Arata's own hidden vulnerabilities. While the other self does not possess distinct named combat abilities like other characters, its creation and destruction are directly tied to Arata's psychological state and memory, serving as a physical manifestation of her pain. Her development sees her transform from a cheerful, self-blaming tomboy to a victim of emotional manipulation and memory loss, and finally to a reconciled individual who achieves the romantic relationship she initially desired.
