Description
Mavis Vermillion was the first guild master and a co-founder of the Fairy Tail guild. She is often referred to as the mother of Fairy Tail and was given the epithet Fairy Tactician for her exceptional skill in creating battle strategies. As a child, she worked for the Red Lizard Guild after her parents, who were mages of that guild, died during a mission. She was mistreated there and forced to pay back debts, but she vowed never to cry, recalling her parents' words that fairies do not approach those who are cry-babies. During an attack by the Blue Skull guild, the Red Lizard guild master's daughter, Zera, died, but Mavis's grief unconsciously created an illusion of Zera that only Mavis could see and interact with. Seven years later, she met Yuri Dreyar, Precht Gaebolg, and Warrod Sequen on Tenrou Island. Through her, these three were introduced to the dark mage Zeref Dragneel, who taught them magic suited to their abilities. Mavis, along with the three, founded the Fairy Tail guild in the year X686. Shortly before founding the guild, she used an incomplete version of a grand magic, Fairy Law, to save Yuri's life. This act prevented her body from ever growing or maturing, leaving her with a childlike appearance. Chronologically, she was twenty-four years old when she was later encased in a Lacrima.
Mavis is kind and protective of Fairy Tail, caring for the guild and its members whenever possible. She is generally cheerful, often smiling and happy, and possesses a playful and sometimes childish demeanor. She can also be carefree and reckless, allowing the escaped convict Jellal Fernandes to participate in the Grand Magic Games to improve the guild's chances of winning and lending the super magic Fairy Glitter to Cana Alberona simply to win a competition. When the situation calls for seriousness, she can set aside her smile and take charge with firm resolve. One of her most notable quirks is her preference for going barefoot, a habit rooted in a traumatic childhood experience and her later comfort on Tenrou Island. She firmly believes in the existence of fairies, a belief inspired by her parents, which heavily influenced the naming of her guild and its core values. For a time after discovering she carried the Ankhseram Black Magic curse, which killed life in proportion to how much she cared for it, she became a frightened and despairing shell of her former self. She went into seclusion and even attempted to end her own life through starvation. However, upon seeing Zeref suffering from the same curse and connecting with him through empathy and love, she resolved to find a way to break the curse. After her consciousness was released from her body, she regained her original cheerful and benevolent nature, though with a lingering layer of seriousness, guilt, and sadness over her past and the future of the guild.
Her primary motivation stems from a deep desire to protect the Fairy Tail guild and the bonds of friendship formed between its members. She views these bonds as the driving force behind the guild's strength. As a foundational figure, she guides and supports the guild from behind the scenes.
Key relationships in her life include Zeref Dragneel, who became her mentor and later her lover. Their connection was tragic and deeply intertwined by the curse they both shared. Unbeknownst to them, their union produced a son, August, who later became a member of the Spriggan 12. Zera was her childhood friend and constant companion on Tenrou Island for seven years, though it was later revealed Zera was an illusion created by Mavis's own grief. Yuri Drayar was a close friend and founding member who had feelings for her and promised to protect her after she saved his life. Precht Gaebolg and Warrod Sequen were her fellow co-founders and close friends. Precht later became the guild's second master, while Warrod became one of the Ten Wizard Saints. She holds love for all members of the Fairy Tail guild, which acts as her central driving force.
Throughout the story, Mavis undergoes profound development. She begins as an orphaned, mistreated child who learns to endure hardship. She grows into a brilliant strategist and the heart of a new guild, only to be struck by a terrible curse that plunges her into isolation and despair. Her connection with Zeref allows her to find a new purpose, and after her physical death and subsequent liberation from the curse in her incorporeal form, she continues to mature emotionally, carrying the weight of her past actions and the guild's future with a more serious demeanor.
Mavis was the creator of the Three Great Fairy Magics, which became legendary spells only usable by members of Fairy Tail. The first is Fairy Law, a super judgment magic that subjugates darkness with sacred light, targeting all whom the caster perceives as an enemy and crushing them spiritually. The second is Fairy Glitter, a super annihilation magic and lost magic that gathers and condenses the radiance of the sun, moon, and stars into a merciless light capable of annihilating all foes. The third is Fairy Sphere, an absolute defense magic that condenses the thoughts of all guild members into powerful magical power, creating an invincible protective sphere that also freezes time for everything inside. After her body was sealed in Lacrima, she became known as Fairy Heart, a source of infinite magical power. She could also project her consciousness as a Thought Projection to interact with her guild members and the world. She also possessed a form of illusion magic, which she used unconsciously to maintain the illusion of Zera for seven years.
