Description
Freed Justine is a mage belonging to the Fairy Tail guild, where he serves as the self-proclaimed leader of the Thunder God Tribe, also known as the Thunder Legion. This subgroup was originally formed to act as personal bodyguards for Laxus Dreyar. Freed is a slim man of average height, most recognizable by his waist-length light-green hair, which he typically ties back in a ponytail, with his bangs brushed to one side to cover most of the right side of his face. His eyes are a greenish-blue shade, and he has a small beauty mark beneath his left eye. His characteristic outfit resembles that of an 18th-century French nobleman, consisting of a long double-breasted coat, a cravat, and a sword at his hip. His Fairy Tail guild mark is colored green and located on the back of his left hand.
In terms of personality, Freed is generally composed and reserved, preferring to remain emotionally and physically distant from the general goings-on of the guild. This calm and collected exterior, however, changes dramatically when the subject turns to Laxus Dreyar. Freed harbors an intense personal loyalty and admiration for Laxus, which can cause him to act in a more childish or overly emotional manner, a contrast his teammates find unusual. Despite his strict and rule-bound demeanor, Freed possesses a deeply caring side. He is honor-bound and feels a strong need to repay any debt he feels he owes to others, sometimes at his own expense. His sense of personal integrity is such that he strictly adheres to the rules of his own magical barriers, though he is also capable of great remorse when his actions have harmed his comrades. Regarding personal mannerisms, Freed claims to feel uncomfortable around women in revealing clothing, such as bikinis, a supposed weakness that causes him to blush and become unable to fight. However, this has been hinted to be a ruse to cover for his deliberate actions. His sexuality has not been explicitly confirmed, but he has been shown staring at three-dimensional images of nude men, suggesting some homosexual tendencies.
Freed's background reveals that he was given a secret task by the guild master, Makarov Dreyar, before he joined the Thunder God Tribe. Makarov had asked Freed to keep an eye on Laxus in the hopes of preventing him from doing something reckless. However, Freed's devotion to Laxus ultimately outweighed this directive, leading him to follow Laxus's orders without question. For a period of half a year, he was absent from the guild and thus did not meet newer members like Lucy Heartfilia. During Fairy Tail's battle with the Phantom Lord guild, he was away in another town and did not participate.
Freed's primary role in the story initially is as an antagonist driven by his loyalty to Laxus. During the Battle of Fairy Tail arc, he uses his magic to set up numerous enchantments and barriers throughout the city of Magnolia, forcing guild members to fight each other to enforce Laxus's vision for the guild. He personally defeats several of his comrades, including Alzack Connell, Reedus Jonah, and Cana Alberona. His one-sided rampage is halted by Mirajane Strauss, who awakens her Satan Soul power to protect her brother. Even after transforming himself into a demonic form with a forbidden spell, Freed is overpowered. As Mirajane prepares to finish him, she hesitates, reminding him that they are still comrades. Freed tearfully confesses he never wanted to hurt anyone, revealing his internal conflict. Following this event, he expresses remorse for his actions, symbolically shaving his head as a sign of atonement, though he eventually returns to his original appearance. He later convinces Makarov not to resign as master for Laxus's sake, showing his first steps toward reconciliation.
His key relationships are central to his character. His unwavering loyalty to Laxus Dreyar is his defining trait, though after the Battle of Fairy Tail, this relationship evolves from blind obedience to one of genuine mutual respect and care. He is the leader of the Thunder God Tribe, working closely with his teammates Evergreen and Bickslow, with whom he shares a strong bond. He was also initially tasked by Makarov Dreyar to supervise Laxus, a duty he failed to uphold due to his extreme devotion.
Throughout the series, Freed undergoes significant development, evolving from a rigid, rule-enforcing extremist who saw Laxus as his only comrade into a more compassionate and integrated member of the Fairy Tail guild. This change is evident during the S-Class Trials on Tenrou Island, where he intentionally forfeits a match to help Cana Alberona progress, prioritizing his sense of honor and guild unity over personal ambition. During the battle against the dark guild Grimoire Heart, he fights alongside his teammates to protect the island. In the Tartaros arc, he is gravely injured by the demon Tempester's Magical Barrier Particles and must be saved by Laxus, an event that deepens his sense of gratitude and reinforces their bond. After Fairy Tail temporarily disbands, Freed joins the Blue Pegasus guild alongside Laxus and the rest of the Thunder God Tribe, only to later return to Fairy Tail upon its reformation. He continues to support Laxus as a reliable ally in subsequent stories, including the fight against the Alvarez Empire and the 100 Years Quest.
Freed is a highly skilled mage with notable abilities centered on two forms of Letter Magic. His primary magic is Dark Écriture, a type of eye magic that allows him to write runes in the air using his sword or fingers. These runes produce various effects, such as inflicting pain or fear on a target, granting himself wings for flight, reflecting projectiles, or even transforming his own body. One of his most powerful techniques is Dark Écriture: Darkness, a forbidden spell that morphs him into a large, demonic creature with greatly enhanced strength and speed. A lesser form, Dark Écriture: Absolute Shadow, covers his upper body in dark armor and allows him to generate electrical attacks. His second magic is Jutsu Shiki, a form of enchantment that allows him to erect magical barriers with absolute rules. Anyone trapped inside a Jutsu Shiki barrier must follow the pre-set rules to escape, making it an ideal spell for setting traps. However, this magic requires significant time and preparation to use effectively, making it less suited for spontaneous combat. To complement his magical abilities, Freed is also a proficient swordsman.
