Mystogan, whose real name is Jellal, is a former S-Class Mage of the Fairy Tail guild and the current King of Edolas. He is the Edolas counterpart of Jellal Fernandes, sharing the same dark eyes, blue hair, and red tattoo on the right side of his face. Born as the son of King Faust, he was the prince of Edolas. During his childhood, he was seriously injured and saved by the Exceed Panther Lily, who was subsequently exiled from Extalia for helping a human; this event forged a deep bond between them. As he grew older, Jellal became disillusioned with his father's use of the interdimensional spell Anima to drain magical power from Earth Land in order to fuel his conquests. Determined to stop this, he left Edolas through an Anima portal and traveled to Earth Land under the alias Mystogan, spending years closing such portals. During his journey, he encountered a young Wendy Marvell, who had been abandoned by her dragon guardian, and he took care of her for about a month before leaving her in the care of an old man named Roubaul. Shortly afterward, he suppressed an Anima portal and joined the Fairy Tail guild, achieving S-Class status in X782. Aware that his face would remind Erza Scarlet of her traumatic past with the Earth Land Jellal, he kept his identity hidden behind a mask and would cast a powerful sleep spell on the guild hall whenever he came to take a job, ensuring no one saw his face; only Master Makarov and Laxus Dreyar could partially resist. Despite his reclusive and taciturn nature, Mystogan was deeply loyal to Fairy Tail. He secretly defeated all of Phantom Lord's subdivisions during the guild war and restored Makarov's drained magic power, allowing him to defeat the enemy master. During the Battle of Fairy Tail, Mystogan confronted Laxus to stop his takeover, but during the fight Laxus blasted off his mask, exposing his face to Erza and Natsu. He denied being the Jellal they knew and teleported away. Later, when Fairy Tail traveled to Edolas, Mystogan's full history was revealed. He opposed his father's regime and helped the Edolas citizens by closing the Anima, ultimately leading to his ascension as the new king of Edolas after Faust's defeat. In Edolas, he is romantically partnered with Erza Knightwalker and has a daughter named Irene. Mystogan's magical abilities center on sleep magic, which can put entire groups of people to sleep, and illusion magic that distorts perception and creates false copies. He wields multiple staves that allow him to perform advanced spells such as Triple Magic Circle: Mirror Water, which reflects magical attacks; Quintuple Magic Circle: Kagura, which seals and puts opponents to sleep with a pillar of light; and his most powerful technique, Septuple Magic Circle: Void, which traps an enemy inside seven overlapping circles and completely erases them from existence. Over the course of the series, Mystogan evolves from a shadowy, mysterious figure into a direct protector of both Earth Land and Edolas, embracing his role as a king while maintaining his caring and selfless nature.
