Description
Jycrain is the name used in certain adaptations, particularly the French version of Fairy Tail, for the character Siegrain. He first appears as a strikingly handsome and composed young man who holds a seat on the Magic Council, the governing body of the magical world. Despite his youth, he is exceptionally powerful, having earned the prestigious rank of one of the Ten Wizard Saints, a fact that allows him to interact with his older and more experienced colleagues with a calm, often detached, and slightly arrogant demeanor.
His background and true nature are central to the mystery surrounding him. Jycrain is identical in appearance to Jellal Fernandes, a dark mage and former childhood friend of the Fairy Tail wizard Erza Scarlet. When Erza first encounters him, Jycrain claims to be Jellal's long-lost twin brother, a story he maintains to hide his true purpose. In reality, Jycrain is not a separate person at all, but a thought projection. This is a advanced form of magical分身 created and controlled by Jellal himself, allowing him to be in two places at once. The projection was so real and independent that it could think, speak, and use magic on its own while sharing its senses and experiences with the real Jellal.
The driving motivation behind Jycrain's existence is a key part of Jellal's grand plan during the Tower of Heaven arc. His role within the Council is to manipulate the other members from within, steering their decisions to benefit his master's goals. He advocates for the use of a devastatingly powerful magical weapon called Etherion, which the Council is reluctant to deploy. Jycrain's private intention is to trick the Council into firing Etherion at the Tower of Heaven, as the immense magical energy would be absorbed by the tower and provide the power needed to complete the R-System, a device meant to resurrect the black wizard Zeref. In this sense, Jycrain acts as a saboteur, using the Council's own power to further Jellal's objectives.
In terms of key relationships, his most significant connection is to his creator, Jellal, to whom he is utterly loyal as they are essentially the same being. He also works closely with Ultear Milkovich, another undercover agent who poses as a fellow Council member. Together, they manipulate the Council's proceedings. His interactions with Erza Scarlet are fraught with tension, as she is haunted by her past with Jellal and briefly believes Jycrain to be him.
Jycrain's development is limited, as he is a static instrument of Jellal's will rather than a character who undergoes personal growth. His arc concludes when his purpose is fulfilled. After the Council fires Etherion and the Tower of Heaven transforms into a massive crystallized magic mass, Jycrain reveals his true nature by destroying the Council chamber alongside Ultear. He then teleports to the tower and is reabsorbed back into Jellal's body, ceasing to exist as a separate entity. A later revelation in the sequel series, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, adds a tragic layer to this story: Jellal's birth name was actually Siegrain (Jycrain). After being kidnapped as a child and witnessing his mother's death, he abandoned that name because he felt he could no longer live up to the idealistic future he had imagined for himself—attending magic school, joining the Council, and becoming a Wizard Saint. The projection "Jycrain" was thus the physical embodiment of that lost, hopeful dream.
As a thought projection, Jycrain possessed all the magical abilities of his creator. He was a highly skilled wizard capable of using Heavenly Body Magic, which includes spells like Meteor, allowing him to move at incredible speeds. He was also proficient in other forms of elemental and powerful magic. His most notable ability, however, was the creation and sustained maintenance of the thought projection itself, a feat of magical control that fooled the highest authorities in the land and marked him as a mage of extraordinary talent.
