Description
Mystogan, whose birth name is Jellal, is a former S-Class Mage of the Fairy Tail guild and later becomes the King of Edolas. He is the Edolas counterpart of Jellal Fernandes, sharing the same dark eyes, blue hair, and red facial tattoo. During his time with Fairy Tail, he always hid his face behind a mask and a cap, and he would cast a powerful sleep spell on the entire guild whenever he visited to accept a job, ensuring no one could see his features. This extreme secrecy stemmed from his desire to spare Erza Scarlet the pain of seeing a face identical to that of the Jellal she had known, who had caused her great suffering. Mystogan is a reclusive and quiet individual, but he demonstrates profound loyalty to Fairy Tail and its members. He often works from the shadows, as seen during Fairy Tail’s war with Phantom Lord, where he single‑handedly defeated all of that guild’s subdivisions and secretly restored Master Makarov’s drained magic power. He also directly confronted Laxus Dreyar during the Battle of Fairy Tail, and in that fight his mask was burned off, revealing his resemblance to Jellal Fernandes. Mystogan was actually born as the prince of Edolas, the son of King Faust. Disillusioned with his father’s use of the interdimensional spell Anima to steal magic from Earth Land, he left Edolas through an Anima portal and traveled Earth Land under the alias Mystogan, closing portals as he went. During his travels he met a young Wendy Marvell, whom he briefly cared for before leaving her with an old man named Roubaul. After joining Fairy Tail, he became an S‑Class Mage. His motivations are rooted in protecting both Earth Land and Edolas from the harm caused by his father’s ambitions. He ultimately returns to Edolas, reverses the Anima, and takes the throne as its king, ensuring its people can live without stolen magic. Mystogan’s most notable relationships include a deep bond with the Exceed Panther Lily, who saved his life when he was a child; Panther Lily later becomes his close friend and ally. He shares a complicated, respectful connection with his Earth Land counterpart, Jellal Fernandes, and a rivalry with Laxus Dreyar. Guild Master Makarov is one of the few who can resist his sleep magic and acts as a mentor figure. As for abilities, Mystogan relies on a set of magic staves, because people of Edolas lack innate magical power. With these staves he wields powerful Sleep Magic, which can incapacitate nearly the entire guild, and Illusion Magic, such as the Skyscraper technique that creates terrifying visions to break an opponent’s mind. He also employs spells like the Three Layered Magic Circle: Mirror Water to reflect attacks, the Five Layered Magic Circle: Sacred Song to fire a concentrated beam, and his ultimate technique, the Septuple Magic Circle: Void, which traps and erases a target entirely. In addition, he can turn his body into mist to avoid harm and can create whirlwinds by combining three staves. Over the course of the story, Mystogan evolves from a shadowy, masked enigma into a self‑sacrificing ruler who openly takes responsibility for his world, showcasing his growth from a reclusive protector to a devoted king.
