TV-Series
Description
Gerard Fernandez, also known as Jellal Fernandes, is a prominent figure whose past is deeply intertwined with Erza Scarlet. Standing at 186 cm tall, his age progresses throughout the series, beginning at 19 during his first major appearance.
The foundation of his character lies in a traumatic childhood. He was kidnapped as a young boy along with Erza and several other children, forced into slavery to construct a magical weapon known as the Tower of Paradise, or the R-System, by a cult that worshipped the black wizard Zeref. During this time, he was a natural leader among the child slaves, known for his bright and cheerful personality. He developed a close bond with Erza, and it was he who gave her the surname Scarlet, telling her it was the color of her hair so he would never forget her.
This innocent childhood came to an end when he was captured and tortured for attempting to lead a rebellion. During this ordeal, he was manipulated by the mage Ultear Milkovich, who disguised herself as the spirit of Zeref. This psychological manipulation twisted his personality, transforming him into a cruel and ruthless individual obsessed with completing the tower and reviving Zeref at any cost. Under this influence, he betrayed his friends, forcing Erza to flee the tower while lying to the others that she had abandoned them. He then spent eight years finishing the tower, eventually also creating a thought projection named Siegrain to infiltrate the Magic Council and further his plans by manipulating them into firing the destructive magic Etherion at the tower, which would instead power the R-System.
As a villain, Gerard was the primary antagonist of the Tower of Paradise arc. He was a powerful and versatile wizard, recognized as one of the Ten Wizard Saints. His primary form of combat is Heavenly Body Magic, which includes spells like Meteor, but he is noted for his incredibly vast magical versatility, mastering many different types of magic. His plan was ultimately thwarted by Natsu Dragneel and Erza, after which he seemingly perished when the tower collapsed.
However, he survived in a state of amnesia and was later found and healed by the young Dragon Slayer Wendy Marvell. With no memory of his past crimes, his original kind-hearted nature resurfaced. He acted on instinct to protect others, attempting to destroy the magical weapon known as Nirvana to prevent it from causing harm. When his memories eventually returned, he was consumed by guilt and remorse for the atrocities he had committed. He willingly surrendered to the Magic Council to face punishment for his actions, which included the death of his friend Simon.
Gerard’s primary motivation shifts entirely from a desire for power to an unwavering commitment to atonement. After being rescued from execution by Ultear and Meredy, who also sought redemption for their past evils, he founded an independent guild called Crime Sorciere. The sole purpose of this guild is to hunt down and destroy dark guilds and the demons of Zeref, effectively working from the shadows to undo the kind of evil he once perpetuated.
His key relationship is with Erza Scarlet, which evolves from childhood friendship to a complex bond of love, betrayal, and forgiveness. Although he deeply cares for her, his guilt prevents him from believing he deserves happiness, leading him to maintain an emotional distance. He also shares a significant relationship with Ultear and Meredy, as they are bound together in their shared journey of redemption. His development is a classic redemption arc: a kind boy corrupted by manipulation, a terrifying villain, a repentant amnesiac, and finally a solemn, self-sacrificing individual dedicating his life to making amends, often from the shadows. He is recognized as an immensely powerful wizard, even being able to fight on par with other top-tier mages like Jura of the Ten Wizard Saints.
