Description
Mistgun, also known as Mystogan, is a character from Fairy Tail whose real name is Jellal. He is the Edolas counterpart of Jellal Fernandes and originally served as an S-Class Mage in the Fairy Tail guild before becoming the King of Edolas. His background is rooted in his role as the prince of Edolas, the son of King Faust. Growing up, he became deeply troubled by his father’s use of a spell called Anima, which drained magic power from the parallel world of Earth Land to sustain Edolas’s limited resources and fuel the king’s conquests. As a child, Mistgun was seriously injured and saved by an Exceed named Panther Lily, who was exiled from Extalia for helping a human. The two formed a close bond. Determined to stop his father’s destructive campaign, Mistgun left Edolas through an Anima portal and entered Earth Land around the year X777. He traveled under the alias Mystogan, closing Anima portals he encountered along the way. During his travels, he met a young Wendy Marvel, who had been abandoned by her dragon guardian, and looked after her for about a month before placing her in the care of an old man named Roubaul. He later joined Fairy Tail and became an S-Class Mage by X782.
Personality wise, Mistgun is reclusive and highly secretive. He deliberately hides his face behind a mask and a cap, and every time he visits the guild to take a job, he uses a powerful sleep spell to render all members unconscious so that no one can see him. This is not out of malice but because he knows his face is identical to Jellal Fernandes, a figure from Erza Scarlet’s painful past, and he wishes to spare her that anguish. Despite his aloofness and lack of conversation, he is extremely loyal to Fairy Tail and its members. He demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility and a protective nature, often putting the guild’s needs above his own. Wendy describes him as a very kind person, and Makarov notes that he does not talk much. His actions show deep wisdom and maturity, especially regarding his understanding of the consequences of magic use in Edolas.
Mistgun’s primary motivation is to end the harm caused by the Anima and to secure a future for the people of Edolas that does not rely on stealing magic from another world. He also wants to ensure the happiness of his friend Panther Lily. During his time in Earth Land, he works to protect Fairy Tail from threats, but his ultimate goal is to return to Edolas and rule as a just king who leads his people without magic.
His role in the story evolves from a mysterious, almost spectral presence within Fairy Tail to a key figure in the Edolas arc. Early on, he is seen only in brief appearances, putting the guild to sleep and taking high-level jobs. During the war with Phantom Lord, he secretly defeats all of that guild’s subdivisions and restores Makarov’s drained magic power. During the Battle of Fairy Tail arc, he confronts Laxus Dreyar, who attempts to take over the guild. In their fight, Laxus blasts off Mistgun’s mask, revealing his face to Erza, who is shocked because she believed Jellal was dead. Mistgun insists he is not the Jellal she knew and teleports away. He later participates in the Edolas arc, where he reveals his true origins, helps the Earth Land fairy tail members navigate the parallel world, and ultimately reverses the Anima, draining all magic from Edolas. He then declares himself the new king and remains in Edolas to lead its people into a life without magic, bidding farewell to his former guildmates.
Key relationships include his bond with Panther Lily, who saved his life and became his closest friend and ally. He has a complicated dynamic with Erza Scarlet, whom he deliberately avoids because of her traumatic history with his Earth Land counterpart. He shares a respectful but tense rivalry with Laxus, who knows his secret. His connection with Wendy is one of brief guardianship; he is surprised to later find she has joined Fairy Tail. Makarov serves as a mentor figure, being one of the few who can partially resist Mistgun’s sleep magic.
Character development occurs as Mistgun moves from a hidden figure to a leader who steps into the light. Initially, he is defined by his desire to remain unseen and his solitary mission. Over time, he reveals his identity and accepts the responsibility of ruling Edolas, showing growth in his willingness to be openly involved with others and to lead with compassion. He becomes a symbol of hope for a world trying to survive without magic.
Notable abilities center on his use of multiple magic staves. His signature technique is a powerful sleep magic that can incapacitate nearly the entire Fairy Tail guild at once; even Makarov feels drowsy, and Erza and Mirajane are affected. He also uses illusion magic to distort landscapes, create copies, or break an opponent’s mind. His staves allow him to cast a variety of spells. Triple Magic Circle: Mirror Water reflects magical attacks back at the enemy. Quintuple Magic Circle: Kagura generates a pillar of light that seals the target and puts them to sleep. He can combine three staves to create a whirlwind attack. His most powerful move is Septuple Magic Circle: Void, which traps the opponent within seven overlapping circles, digitizes them, and erases them entirely. He also displays the ability to teleport and can transform his body into a gust of wind to evade attacks. Despite his strength, he has limitations when stealth is not possible, and his combat style emphasizes evasion and surprise rather than direct confrontation.
