Laxus Dreyar is an S-Class Mage of the Fairy Tail guild. He is the grandson of Makarov Dreyar, the guild's master, and the son of Ivan Dreyar, the master of the dark guild Raven Tail. As a child, Laxus was kind-hearted and deeply attached to his grandfather and the guild, but his personality changed after his father was excommunicated. He grew to believe that his reputation came only from being Makarov's grandson, not from his own strength, and became determined to prove himself. This led him to develop an arrogant, overbearing, and selfish demeanor. He looked down on weaker members, believed himself to be the strongest in Fairy Tail, and cared little for his guildmates unless they could offer him something in return. His primary concern was the strength and reputation of the guild, and he was enraged by anyone who mocked it.

Driven by a desire to become guild master and eliminate all weak members, Laxus served as the main antagonist of the Fighting Festival arc. He used his Lightning Magic and his team, the Thunder God Tribe, to trap Fairy Tail members and force them to fight him. During his battle with Natsu Dragneel and Gajeel Redfox, he entered a berserker state and showed a ruthless willingness to destroy Magnolia and its people. However, after being defeated and excommunicated, Laxus underwent a significant redemption. He took full responsibility for his actions so that the Thunder God Tribe could remain in the guild, demonstrating a newfound sense of honor and care for others. He later shed tears during the Fantasia parade when Makarov silently communicated that he would always watch over him.

After Fairy Tail disbanded, Laxus temporarily joined Blue Pegasus along with the Thunder God Tribe, but he returned to Fairy Tail upon its reformation. His attitude became more light-hearted and serene, and he grew genuinely protective of his guild. He inherited Makarov's will and emerged as a leader figure, willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of others. Key relationships include his grandfather Makarov, who serves as an emotional anchor and mentor; his estranged father Ivan, who implanted the Lightning Dragon Lacrima in him as a child; and his loyal Thunder God Tribe—Freed Justine, Bickslow, and Evergreen—who stand by him. He also developed respect for fellow S-Class mages such as Erza Scarlet, Natsu Dragneel, and Gajeel Redfox, initially rivals who later became comrades.

Laxus's primary ability is Lightning Magic, which he can produce, control, and manipulate at will. He can generate electrical discharges from his body, launch lightning from nearly any location, and even transform his body into lightning for high-speed movement and evasion. Because his father implanted a Lightning Dragon Lacrima in him, he is an artificial Dragon Slayer, granting him Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic. This allows him to use attacks such as Lightning Dragon's Roar, cover his skin in dragon scales, and enter a Dragon Force state that increases his power. He also knows the ultimate spell Fairy Law, which can judge and incapacitate only those the caster perceives as enemies. Later in the series, he develops advanced forms such as Red Lightning Dragon Mode and Lightning Dragon King Mode. As a Dragon Slayer, he suffers from motion sickness, which he is deeply ashamed of. Through his journey from antagonist to steadfast protector, Laxus Dreyar becomes one of Fairy Tail's most powerful and dependable mages.
