Description
Jellal Fernandes, also known by the alias Siegrain, is a prominent character whose life is defined by a tragic fall from grace and a long, arduous journey toward redemption. His history is deeply intertwined with that of Erza Scarlet, a fellow childhood slave at the Tower of Heaven, a structure also known as the R-System, which was designed to resurrect the infamous dark mage Zeref.

As a boy, Jellal was kind, optimistic, and protective of his friends, willingly taking punishment to shield Erza from harm. This gentle nature was shattered when he was manipulated by Ultear Milkovich, who posed as the spirit of Zeref, twisting his mind and corrupting his innocent desire for freedom into an obsessive madness. Believing he was serving Zeref, Jellal became the ruthless mastermind behind completing the Tower of Heaven, treating the enslaved workers with deceptive kindness to increase their productivity while plotting to use Erza as the final sacrifice. To further his plans, he created a magical thought projection using the name Siegrain, a separate persona that successfully infiltrated the Magic Council, achieving one of his childhood dreams as part of an elaborate deception.

Following his defeat at the hands of Natsu Dragneel and the collapse of the tower, Jellal was presumed dead but was later revived by the Sky Dragon Slayer, Wendy Marvell. Initially suffering from amnesia, he remembered only the name Erza, and as his memories returned, he was horrified by the atrocities he had committed. Overwhelmed with guilt, he attempted to end his own life, but Erza convinced him that he should live to atone for his sins. This marked the beginning of his redemption arc. He later founded and led an independent guild called Crime Sorcière, alongside Ultear and Meredy, dedicated to eradicating dark guilds from the shadows as a form of penance. Though he surrendered himself to the Magic Council to face justice for his past crimes, he was eventually freed from prison and continued his fight against powerful threats, including the Alvarez Empire and the black dragon Acnologia.

Jellal's most significant relationship is with Erza Scarlet. He named her after the color of her scarlet hair, a promise to never forget her, and their bond encompasses deep friendship, betrayal, and eventually, a complex, supportive connection built on shared suffering and forgiveness. While corrupted, he was an antagonist to Natsu Dragneel, but Natsu's unwavering strength and spirit eventually played a key role in freeing Jellal from his madness, leading to an uneasy alliance where Jellal provided Natsu with the "Punishment Flame" to defeat a common enemy.

Jellal is an exceptionally powerful wizard, originally counted among the Ten Wizard Saints. He primarily wields Heavenly Body Magic, a formidable style that allows him to move at incredible speeds like a meteor with the spell "Meteor," and unleash powerful celestial attacks such as "Grand Chariot," which summons seven pillars of light, and "Sema," which calls down a devastating meteor from the sky. He also has knowledge of Dark Magic, including the forbidden spell "Abolish" (also known as Dark Ecriture), which can erase physical objects, and "Purgatory Crush," a forbidden fusion of the four elements that creates a massive wave of destruction. His ability to create a fully functional and independent thought projection, Siegrain, is a testament to his immense magical skill. In his later quest for redemption, he wields these overwhelming abilities in the service of others, constantly seeking to balance the scales of his past.
