Description
Suguru Kinniku, known as Kinnikuman, is the prince and eventual 58th monarch of Planet Kinniku, a world renowned for producing the universe's greatest superheroes. His story begins with an extraordinary and absurd origin: as an infant, his parents, Mayumi and Sayuri Kinniku, were on a family vacation to Earth when they mistook him for a pig and accidentally ejected him from their spacecraft. Left to fend for himself on an alien planet, he grew up in isolation, building his own small dwelling and struggling to fit into human society.
During his early years on Earth, Kinnikuman adopted the persona of a clumsy and comedic superhero, a far cry from the noble champion he would one day become. He was lazy, arrogant, and emotionally immature, often chasing fame and the attention of women while moving from one menial job to another. His early attempts at heroism were chaotic and inept; he would battle kaiju by consuming garlic to grow to a towering height of 30 meters, but his clumsiness often caused more collateral damage than the monsters themselves, leading the public to fear him as much as any villain. He is often childish, prone to complaining and pouting when he does not get his way. However, this immature exterior conceals a very noble and courageous heart. When his friends or innocent lives are in grave danger, his cowardice vanishes, and he displays a profound sense of honor that surpasses even the greatest of heroes. His personality is defined by this duality: a goofy, lecherous underdog who, in his most desperate moments, becomes a paragon of justice and resilience.
Kinnikuman's life transforms when he is discovered by Meat Alexandria, an emissary from Planet Kinniku who reveals his royal lineage. Recruited to reclaim his throne from the usurper King Tone, Kinnikuman fails in his initial attempt but sets out on a path of growth that defines his character arc. His journey from a comedic failure to a legendary hero occurs primarily within the wrestling ring, most notably during the Chojin Olympics, which he wins twice, and in battles against various evil chojin factions. His central motivation evolves from a selfish desire for popularity to a deep-seated need to protect others and prove himself worthy of his heritage. As a wrestler, he masters techniques such as the iconic Kinniku Buster, a devastating neckbreaker-drop maneuver. He also possesses a special ability known as Burning Inner Strength, which allows him to access extraordinary power and mount miraculous comebacks when facing insurmountable odds.
The character's development is heavily influenced by his key relationships. His most important bond is with the American wrestler Terryman, who begins as a rival but quickly becomes his best friend and inseparable tag-team partner. Their partnership, known as The Machineguns, is built on unwavering trust and mutual support. Another crucial relationship is with Bibimba, an assassin initially sent to kill him. Despite Kinnikuman finding her annoying at first, her persistent love and his own kindness eventually transform her into his devoted fiancée and later his wife. Their relationship deepens across the series, culminating in marriage and the birth of their son, Mantaro Kinniku. He also forges strong alliances with former enemies, such as the British knight Robin Mask, whose rivalry turns into deep respect, and the demon chojin Buffaloman, who is swayed to the side of justice by Kinnikuman's honor and friendship.
In his later years, as depicted in the sequel series Kinnikuman Nisei (known as Ultimate Muscle in the West), Kinnikuman has aged into a physically diminished king. He now has a large stomach and atrophied muscles, though his tactical knowledge, grappling expertise, and kind heart remain intact. He deliberately conceals his heroic past from his son Mantaro, choosing to live as a simple, doting father to foster a normal bond. Despite his retired status and physical decline, he continues to mentor the next generation, reopens the Hercules Factory to train new heroes, and quietly steps in to defend the world when new threats emerge, proving that his legacy as a hero extends far beyond his physical prime.
