Description
Detective Gobugari is a supporting character from the anime adaptation of Kinnikuman, originally based on the manga character Detective Akaiwa. The name change from Akaiwa to Gobugari was implemented for legal reasons during the production of the anime series. The name Gobugari itself translates to close haircut, a reference to his distinctive cropped hairstyle. In the anime, he holds the position of Police Inspector at the West Sumidagawa Station. His counterpart in the original manga, Detective Akaiwa, serves as the Chief Inspector of the Jōsai District Police and leads a group known as the Akaiwa Corps.
In terms of personality, Detective Gobugari is characterized by his overzealous but ultimately ineffective approach to law enforcement. He and his officers frequently appear at the scenes of disturbances involving the protagonist, often arriving with a great deal of noise and firepower, including machine guns. Despite this aggressive entrance, they typically fail to resolve the situation or make a meaningful impact on the events unfolding around them. Gobugari initially shares a rivalry with Kinnikuman, treating the superhero with suspicion and often finding himself at odds with the hero's unconventional methods.
Detective Gobugari acts as a recurring figure of comedic relief, particularly in the early episodes of the anime. His role is largely to provide filler comedy, as he and his men inject a sense of chaotic but harmless authority into the storyline. He is motivated by a desire to maintain order and apprehend criminals, but his efforts are consistently undercut by his own incompetence or by the sheer absurdity of the situations he encounters. For instance, during the first Kaiju Extermination arc, he arrives to confront the Brutal Alien but is accidentally knocked unconscious by a bus before he can take any effective action.
Throughout the series, his role evolves. While initially positioned as a rival to Kinnikuman, he gradually becomes part of an informal cheering squad for the hero. Alongside other comedic characters such as Kinkotsuman and Iwao, Gobugari transitions from an antagonistic authority figure to a supportive, if still largely ineffective, ally who roots for Kinnikuman's success. Despite his increased prominence in the anime, his appearances in the source manga are very limited, occurring in only two story arcs.
Detective Gobugari has several key relationships within the story. He has a notable dynamic with Kinnikuman, marked by an initial rivalry that softens over time. He also frequently associates with Kinkotsuman and Iwao, the three of them forming a comedic trio that comments on the action and provides slapstick humor. This group is sometimes seen together even during vacation sequences, highlighting their role as a consistent comedic presence. In terms of development, Gobugari does not experience a dramatic personal arc but instead shifts his alignment from a minor obstacle to a background supporter of the main hero. His character is largely absent from later portions of the franchise. Notably, Detective Gobugari does not appear in the second anime series, Kinnikuman: Scramble for the Throne, which excludes several anime-original characters from the first series.
Regarding notable abilities, Detective Gobugari possesses no superhuman powers or extraordinary skills. His primary tools are his authority as a police inspector and the firearms carried by himself and his men. His approach is to overwhelm situations with force, but his lack of success in actually resolving conflicts is a defining trait. His most significant ability is arguably his resilience, as he frequently returns to the scene despite repeated failures and embarrassments.
