TV-Series
Description
King Mayumi Kinniku, often referred to simply as King Kinniku, is the 57th ruler of Planet Kinniku and the father of the series' protagonist, Suguru Kinniku. He is easily recognized by the kanji character for king, 王 (Ō), which is prominently displayed on his forehead.
A former athlete of considerable renown, Mayumi is a two-time champion of the Chojin Olympics and a former Universal Grappling Champion. His own prowess as a warrior is established by his signature techniques, which include the powerful Iron Claw and the Kinniku Flash. Despite his royal lineage, he notably does not possess knowledge of the three great secret techniques of the Kinniku Clan and never employs the Face Flash ability.
In his personal life, Mayumi is married to Sayuri Kinniku. Their relationship is characterized by a deep, genuine love for one another, even though his eccentric and often embarrassing behavior frequently exasperates her. This comedic, goofball nature extends to his interactions with his son, Suguru, with whom he argues constantly. Their relationship is a complex mix of open ridicule and hidden pride. Mayumi's failings as a parent are legendary; the harsh training he imposed on his eldest son, Ataru, caused the boy to run away from home. In a misguided attempt to avoid repeating this mistake, he raised Suguru very indulgently, yet still frequently quarreled with him. The most infamous incident of his poor parenting occurred during a family vacation to Earth, where he mistook the infant Suguru for a pig and accidentally abandoned him on the planet. This blunder led to the pig, King Ton, being raised as a prince in Suguru's place, eventually overthrowing Mayumi and seizing the throne of Planet Kinniku.
Desperate to reclaim his crown, Mayumi sent his aide, Meat Alexandria, to retrieve Suguru from Earth. Although Suguru failed to defeat King Ton in a match, Mayumi took advantage of the ensuing chaos to snatch the King's Belt and restore himself as ruler. Despite his surface-level antics and constant bickering with his son, a deep paternal care emerges during Suguru's battles. Whenever Suguru fights, particularly when he is winning, Mayumi cheers loudly and proudly boasts that the champion is his son. He serves as a key supporting character throughout the story, cheering from the sidelines and occasionally providing crucial information to help Suguru in tournaments.
One of Mayumi's most significant and long-standing relationships is his fierce rivalry with Harabote Muscle, the future chairman of the Chojin League. Their rivalry dates back to childhood, and as adults, they frequently appear in unpopular exhibition matches that showcase their physical clashes, such as when Mayumi applies a figure-four leg-lock. This rivalry provides much of the comedic relief in his role as a spectator.
Mayumi's character gains unexpected depth during the Survivor Match for the Kinniku Throne arc. When the Five Evil Gods challenge Suguru's legitimacy as heir, hinting that a hospital fire may have led to a baby swap, Mayumi is forced to balance his paternal instincts with his duty as an impartial king. He publicly concedes to a tournament to decide the true heir but privately continues to aid Suguru, exposing a rival's technique as a fake. During this arc, the existence of his estranged son, Ataru, is revealed, and Mayumi uses the Kinniku Clan's Prophecy Book to deduce that a mysterious competitor, Kinnikuman Soldier, is actually Ataru in disguise. This leads to the tragic revelation that Ataru is willing to sacrifice himself for his younger brother.
In his youth, Mayumi was shaped by a pivotal encounter. While playing with Harabote Muscle, they discovered a forbidden area and found the imprisoned chojin, Nemesis. Influenced by his father, Tatsunori, who spoke of Nemesis as a kind man, a young Mayumi promised to work toward creating a Kinniku Clan where no one would suffer as Nemesis had. He witnessed the fractured nature of his clan and the assassination attempts on his father, the 56th king and inventor of the Niku Curtain. This backstory reveals a character who, despite his comedic and flawed exterior, carries the weight of his royal lineage and strives for a better future for his people.
