Description
Kouji Aiba is a sixteen-year-old boy from Earth who enrolls at the space station Liebe Delta to earn his Level 2 piloting license. He was raised by his mother after his parents divorced, and he unconsciously takes on a patronizing, guardian-like role toward his younger brother Yuki. Despite his well-meaning nature, the two brothers clash frequently, and verbal or physical confrontations often erupt when they meet. Outside of this domestic tension, Kouji is an honest, empathetic person who goes out of his way to avoid open conflict.

At first glance, he appears weak and indecisive, but this impression masks a genuine talent for diplomacy. He is an average student, ranking twenty-sixth in pilot testing while his brother and close friend Ikumi Oze place first and second. His true strength lies in his ability to read people and to ease tensions through patience and communication. When the students aboard the stranded Ryvius descend into chaos and factionalism, Kouji continually works to preserve what remains of civil order. He becomes one of the ship’s informal supervisors, striving to resolve disputes without violence and to keep a sense of shared humanity alive in a deteriorating environment.

Kouji’s key relationships shape much of his journey. His childhood friend Aoi Housen, a flight-attendant trainee, acts like an older sister or mother figure toward both Aiba brothers, often checking on them even when they resist her concern. Kouji initially avoids Aoi’s attention and harbors an obvious attraction to Fina S. Shinozaki, an aristocratic girl from Uranus, though the depth of her reciprocation remains unclear. His bond with roommate Ikumi Oze is one of genuine friendship, but Ikumi’s later descent into paranoia and authoritarianism puts their connection to the test. The mysterious girl Neya, a non‑human guardian of the vessel, is another presence whose interventions indirectly affect Kouji’s choices.

During the crisis, Kouji’s motivation pivots from simple conflict avoidance to a deeper need to restore order and protect a fragile community. He is forced to reckon with his own tendency to please everyone at the expense of his own feelings and values, a flaw he comes to recognize as a form of cowardice. This self-awareness marks a turning point: instead of simply smoothing over disagreements, he begins to take a firmer stand and helps guide the castaways back toward cooperation and, eventually, a return to civilization. By the end of the ordeal, his relationship with Aoi resolves openly, and the two become a couple.

Kouji’s most notable ability is not piloting prowess but his social and diplomatic skill. In a situation where panic and selfishness could easily take over, he remains one of the few who consistently act as a civilizing force, reminding others of trust and mutual responsibility. His arc moves from a conflict-averse boy who shies away from his own emotions to a young man who can face hard truths about himself, lean on those who care for him, and help lead a scattered group toward a shared future.
