Description
Neya is the biological core and guardian entity of the spaceship Ryvius. She is an enigmatic non-human being that awakened when the 487 stranded students of the Liebe Delta space station desperately wished to survive. Although not human, she adopted the physical form of a deceased young woman found drifting in space. That woman was later revealed to be the daughter of Conrad Vicuss, the military officer sent to capture the Ryvius. Neya appears as a teenage girl with short gray hair, red eyes, and a distinctive pink outfit.
In the early part of the story, Neya lacks her own emotions and simply repeats the strongest thoughts or feelings of whoever is near her. She speaks in a detached manner, murmuring the words of others as if she does not yet understand their meaning. As the Ryvius continues its journey, she gradually learns about human joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure, and begins to develop genuine feelings of her own. Her motivation shifts from being a mere echo of human emotion to actively seeking peace and protecting the ship and its crew.
Neya's role in the narrative is that of the ship's Sphix, an alien guardian that defends the Ryvius and intervenes at critical moments to ensure the survival of the young castaways. She often appears unexpectedly, wandering the corridors or even walking through solid walls, which causes many students to believe she is a ghost. She can survive unprotected in the vacuum of space and has the ability to manipulate the ship's artificial gravity. Her powers are intrinsically linked to the Ryvius itself, and her interventions are essential during key battles and emergencies.
The most notable relationship Neya forms is with the protagonist Kouji Aiba. She first appears to him during the collapse of the Liebe Delta and takes a special interest in him, often seeking him out and even saving his life on occasion. Another significant figure is the student Nicks, who develops a strong attraction to her striking appearance. The most emotionally charged relationship is with Conrad Vicuss, who is horrified to see his own daughter's face on the being that defends the ship he is ordered to destroy. In the final confrontation, Neya appears before Conrad and begs him to stop the fighting, demonstrating her growth into a compassionate entity.
Throughout the series, Neya develops from a passive, emotionless observer into an active, feeling being capable of empathy and pleading for peace. After the ordeal, when the Ryvius is reactivated for a new voyage, she continues to fulfill her role as the ship's Sphix and guardian. Her notable abilities include functioning as the biological core of the Ryvius, walking through solid objects, surviving in space without protection, echoing the emotions of others, and eventually acting with her own will to protect the ship and its inhabitants.
