Description
Charlie, whose full name is Good Turtleland III, is a sixteen-year-old male character and a member of the Zwei, the elite group of piloting cadets aboard the training ship Liebe Delta. He has a distinctive appearance, characterized by blonde hair styled into a pompadour and a heavy, stout build. Despite his prestigious position within the Zwei program, Charlie is not particularly bright or quick-witted, and his defining personality trait is his weak and easily intimidated nature.
This insecure disposition makes him a prime target for the aggressive and power-hungry Airs Blue and his gang, known as Team Blue. They frequently single him out, violently interrogating him for strategic information about the ship Ryvius. Charlie is also easily swayed by flattery and manipulation. This flaw is exploited most effectively by Criff Kei, a member of Team Blue, who uses her charms to seduce him. Charlie, who is quickly smitten and genuinely believes she loves him, becomes a willing informant for the gang, earning him the derogatory nickname Charlie, which he initially despises.
His primary motivation throughout much of the story is his unrequited love and desperate need for approval from Criff Kei. This drives him to betray sensitive information to Team Blue, contributing directly to their successful coup that brings the Ryvius under Airs Blue's control. After the coup, his hopes are shattered when Criff promptly discards him, making it clear her affections were a mere ruse. Despite her cruel taunts and public humiliation, Charlie persists in his attempts to win her back, demonstrating a stubborn and naive devotion.
Charlie's role evolves from that of a passive victim to a figure of quiet loyalty. The turning point for his character occurs after Team Blue falls from power, and a furious mob of students corners the Kei sisters. In a moment of genuine courage, Charlie physically places himself between Criff and her attackers, suffering a severe beating in her defense. This act of selflessness lands them both in a brig cell, where Charlie continues to show his devotion by sacrificing his own meager food rations to ensure Criff does not go hungry. It is in this vulnerable state that Criff, moved by his sincerity and indebted to him, begins to see him differently. She tends to his wounds, and when her sister Michelle later breaks them out, Criff makes the decisive choice to stay with Charlie, now using his full name, Good Turtleland III. In a final, quiet assertion of his own identity, Charlie asks her to call him by the nickname he had once hated, solidifying their relationship as a genuine couple.
One of his notable verbal tics is the catchphrase, That's why I said so, which he uses frequently. Beyond his loyalty and capacity for growth, Charlie does not possess any exceptional combat or piloting abilities. His development is entirely personal, culminating in a notable physical transformation after the events of the series. Upon the crew's return to Earth, with Criff's encouragement, he successfully undergoes a diet, returning to the Ryvius with a slimmer physique, though his signature pompadour hairstyle remains unchanged.
