Description
Dr. Mikhail Pavlichenko is a Russian scientist and the father of twins Shion and Suou Pavlichenko. He is a prominent researcher, recognized as a leading authority in the field of brain science and specifically the development of the ME (Memory Extractor) technology. His work is considered significant enough to threaten established powers, including Contractors and intelligence organizations. He was formerly married to Asako Nakimiya, a Japanese woman.
In his personal life, Mikhail is portrayed as a cold and stern figure, particularly towards his daughter Suou. He often scolds her and physically prevents her from spending what he deems to be too much time with her brother, Shion, whom he keeps confined to his room. This harsh demeanor stems from a deep-seated guilt over his son having become a Contractor two years prior to the story's beginning. His primary motivation is to control the circumstances around his children, driven by a belief that ordinary people are endangered by Contractors.
Mikhail's role in the narrative is intricately tied to his unethical scientific research. He masterminded a project to "resurrect" his daughter after the real Suou was killed in an explosion. Using Shion's contractor ability to create copies combined with his own memory extraction technology, he produced a female copy of Shion. This copy, who believes herself to be the original Suou, was implanted with artificial memories of a family life. The series begins with a version of Mikhail who is seemingly killed by Hei during a raid by Russian security forces. It is later revealed that this death was a fabrication; the man killed was a copy, while the real Mikhail continued his work, monitoring events from Tokyo near Hell's Gate.
A key relationship is with his son, Shion, whom he relies upon as the catalyst for his cloning experiments. His relationship with Suou, the copy, is complex. Unlike his ex-wife Asako, who rejects the duplicate as a fake, Mikhail ultimately comes to recognize and accept the clone as his true daughter, viewing her as the real Suou brought back to life through his and Shion's abilities. He shares a final moment with her in the Sunshine Aquarium, a place from her fabricated memories, where he defends her from attackers before being mortally wounded by a Contractor and dying from blood loss.
Throughout the story, Mikhail's character develops from a seemingly cold and guilty father into a figure driven by a twisted form of paternal love, willing to defy the laws of nature to restore his family. His notable abilities lie not in combat, but in his scientific genius. He is the creator of the ME technology used for extracting and implanting memories and is the architect of the elaborate scheme to create a copy of his daughter. He also taught Suou how to use a rifle, a skill she employs throughout the series.
