Description
Madame Oreille operates as a prominent underworld information broker in the world of Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor. She is also known to work as an intelligence agent with ties to the Central Intelligence Agency, having met with a CIA agent named Mr. Smith on at least one occasion. Her physical appearance is characterized by short, blonde hair, and she is often seen wearing elegant attire that includes a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and waistcoats in varying shades of purple and black. She also wears purple lipstick and earrings, and her eye color is lilac.
Her personality is described as mysterious, conniving, and highly knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects and individuals. She possesses vast information and intelligence, which she uses to manipulate events and people to her advantage. She recruits the protagonist Hei to take down a Section 3 convoy, though later Hei cuts off contact with her after questioning her motives and finding her untrustworthy. When Hei goes rogue again, Madame Oreille assists the CIA in locating him. She is also known to have had a past relationship with the Contractor Mao, whom she calls by the name Ricardo.
Her motivations are not entirely transparent, but she appears driven by a desire for knowledge, control, and influence. As part of Shion Pavlichenko's larger plan, Madame Oreille collaborates with Doctor Pavlichenko to build a supercomputer that contains all the records of the world, observed by the Doll Network and all memories of mankind gathered by the ME Network. This project aligns her with the ambitious scheme to preserve and manipulate vast amounts of data.
In terms of role in the story, Madame Oreille functions as a shadowy information broker who provides crucial intelligence and receives missions from various parties. She also orchestrates dangerous operations, such as sending Contractors to kill the Doll Yin during the events of the Gaiden OVAs. At the conclusion of Gemini of the Meteor, after American occupation forces subdue the old Syndicate, a new Syndicate is established that includes misaki, Kobayashi, Mao, and Madame Oreille herself, indicating her ascent to a position of significant power within the new world order.
Her development shows her moving from a behind-the-scenes information dealer to a more direct leadership role in the post-war power structure. Notable abilities include her extensive network of contacts, her strategic cunning, and her capacity to gather and leverage sensitive information from multiple intelligence sources. She is not a Contractor or Doll, relying instead on human intellect and connections. Her elegant and calm demeanor often masks her manipulative and dangerous nature.
