TV-Series
Description
Rabat is a supporting character in Vandread: The Second Stage, an intergalactic trader and occasional pirate who appears sporadically over the course of the series. He is 35 years old, 203 centimeters tall, and 97 kilograms, with black hair and black eyes, and he is almost always accompanied by a female orangutan named Butan. Unlike most characters in the story, who come from worlds where men and women live in complete separation, Rabat did not grow up in such a divided society, which gives him a different outlook on the conflict between the male and female populations.

His name is said to be a contraction of the phrase "rat bastard," which reflects his reputation as a swindler and con artist. He is charming, especially toward women, but his loyalties are hard to pin down, and he tends to work for whoever offers the best deal. He is also physically imposing and capable in a fight; at one point he beats up Hibiki in order to teach him a lesson. Although he is not a main character and makes only a few appearances, he holds information that is important to the crew of the Nirvana, particularly about the true nature of the enemies they are up against.

Rabat is motivated primarily by self-interest and survival. It is revealed that he has been working for Earth, selling information about rebellious planets in exchange for his own safety. He changes sides, however, once he sees that the multi-planetary force Hibiki assembles has a realistic chance of defeating Earth. This shift shows that his mercenary behavior comes from pragmatism rather than ideology: he backs the side he believes is most likely to win and most able to keep him safe.

Rabat also carries a backstory that ties into the series' larger mythology. Years before meeting Hibiki, he went by the name Adams and crashed on a planet inhabited by telepathic native Americans, who taught him their legends. This experience is why he is able to recognize Dita as the Blue Cachina, a figure from those legends, giving him knowledge that the main characters do not initially have. His past explains why he takes the approaching threat seriously and why his intelligence carries weight with the crew.

In terms of abilities, Rabat is a skilled fighter, as shown in his physical confrontation with Hibiki, but his main strengths lie in trade and information gathering. As a traveling merchant and con artist, he has access to intelligence about Earth's activities and the wider conflict, and he knows how to use that knowledge as leverage. His persuasive nature and ability to charm others let him move freely between different groups without fully committing to any of them until it suits his interests. By the end of his involvement, he moves from a self-interested informant to an ally of the multi-planetary coalition, though always on his own terms.
