Description
Gourry Gabriev is a master swordsman and one of the central characters in The Slayers Revolution. He serves as the self-proclaimed protector and constant companion of the sorceress Lina Inverse. Standing approximately 182 centimeters tall with long blonde hair and blue eyes, he is the tallest member of the main cast and is considered handsome in appearance. His age is generally accepted to be around twenty-two at the start of the series.

Gourry hails from the Elmekian Empire, where his family, the Gabrievs, have been swordsmen for generations. The family is the keeper of a legendary treasure, the Sword of Light, also known as Gorun Nova. A bitter feud broke out within the family over who would inherit this powerful weapon, a conflict that Gourry deeply disliked. In an attempt to stop the fighting, he ran away from home, taking the Sword of Light with him. After leaving, he became a wandering mercenary, taking on various odd jobs to survive. He gave up this lifestyle after meeting a man who advised him to do something important with his life. In a twist of fate, this man was Lina Inverse's father, though neither Gourry nor Lina are aware of this connection. Just a few days after this encounter, Gourry came across Lina in the woods and decided to become her full-time guardian, a role he has maintained ever since.

In terms of personality, Gourry is most famously known for his lack of intelligence and extremely poor memory. He often forgets important facts, the names of his enemies, or events that happened only minutes prior. This trait is a running source of comedy, as he consistently misunderstands situations and makes blunt observations. Despite this mental slowness, he is incredibly kind, loyal, and chivalrous. He is also an eternal optimist who rarely worries, helping to keep the group's spirits high even during world-ending crises. He has a calm demeanor that serves as a perfect foil to Lina's fiery and greedy personality. While he usually tolerates Lina's abusive tantrums, his own patience is generally only strained when he is deprived of food, as he shares Lina's great passion for eating.

Gourry's primary motivation is his self-appointed duty to protect Lina Inverse. He has stated that he would stay by her side for the rest of his life, and this mission has become his reason for living. Without this duty, he feels he would have nothing. Although Lina is a powerful sorceress who hardly needs protection, the two look out for each other, forming a highly effective partnership. His role in the story is that of Lina's closest and most consistent companion, acting as her bodyguard and the muscle of the group, engaging enemies in close-quarters combat while she casts spells from a distance.

Key relationships define much of his role. His bond with Lina Inverse is the most central. What begins as him mistaking her for a damsel in distress evolves into a deep friendship and eventually into love. Their romantic feelings are rarely explored openly, partly due to Lina's immaturity, but they share an incredibly strong mutual bond and can often sense what the other is thinking. He also shares a good friendship with Zelgadiss Graywords, as the two are the only regular human men in the group. Zelgadiss often respects Gourry's insights and simple perspective, and they sometimes discuss the baffling behavior of the women in their party. Sylphiel Nels Lahda is openly infatuated with Gourry, though he seems largely oblivious to her affections, usually remembering her primarily for her excellent cooking skills. He acts as a kind and protective older brother figure toward her. His relationship with the swordsman Zangulus begins as a rivalry, as Zangulus is determined to defeat the Sword of Light. Though neither would admit it at first, they develop a grudging mutual respect and eventually become good friends.

Despite his intellectual shortcomings, Gourry possesses remarkable abilities. He is acknowledged as one of the world's greatest swordsmen, with formidable combat skills that do not rely on any magic. For most of the series, he wields the Sword of Light, a mystical weapon that can create a blade of pure destructive energy. He later acquires the Blast Sword, a weapon that recycles magical energy to become increasingly sharper. He also has highly acute senses, including exceptional eyesight and hearing, and possesses great intuition and observational skills on the battlefield. A notable example is that he figured out the mysterious priest Xellos was a mazoku, or monster, long before anyone else did, simply believing it to be obvious. Surprisingly, the series creator has stated that Gourry actually has a natural magic capacity that could rival Lina's destructive power, but his inconsistent memory and inability to remember spells renders him completely useless in the field of magic.

While Gourry shows little to no development in terms of intelligence throughout the series, his emotional growth is tied to his deepening bond with Lina. His past is shrouded in mystery, and he rarely speaks of it, preferring to live in the present. He is a descendant of the swordsman Rowdy Gabriev, though he is fully human. A running visual gag in the anime involves Gourry being forced to dress in women's clothing, a tradition that appears in the seventeenth episodes of the first three seasons.
