Description
In the Italian-language dub of the anime Slayers Revolution, the character known in the original Japanese version as Gourry Gabriev is renamed Guido. He is a central figure in the series, serving as the primary companion and self-proclaimed protector of the sorceress Lina Inverse.

Guido is a master swordsman who lacks any aptitude for magic, relying entirely on his physical abilities and his weapon in combat. He is a tall young man, noted to be around 182 cm, and is a descendant of a family that once wielded the legendary Sword of Light, an heirloom he has inherited. His background includes running away from his homeland of Elmekia to escape family conflicts over the succession of this powerful sword, after which he became a wandering mercenary.

Personality-wise, Guido is most famously characterized by his lack of intelligence and extremely poor memory. Lina often compares his cognitive abilities to those of a jellyfish, as he frequently forgets important events, the names of enemies, and even conversations that happened moments prior. Despite this intellectual shortcoming, he is kind-hearted, loyal, and possesses remarkably sharp instincts, particularly in battle and when reading the intentions of others. For example, he can often intuit Lina's strategic plans without being told and has demonstrated the ability to see through the deceptions of powerful beings like Xelloss.

His primary motivation is to stay by Lina Inverse's side. What began as a mistaken belief that she was a helpless child needing protection evolved into a deep friendship and a sense of purpose, with Guido stating that protecting her is his sole reason for living. While a romantic undertone exists in their relationship, it is rarely explored openly due to Lina's immaturity and the narrative's focus on adventure and comedy.

In the specific story arc of Slayers Revolution, Guido and Lina are traveling through the kingdom of Ruvinagardo in search of a new weapon for him, as he lost the legendary Sword of Light in a previous battle. Their journey leads them to reunite with old friends, the chimera swordsman Zelgadis and the princess Amelia, and to become entangled in a plot involving the destruction of magical tanks, for which Lina is initially blamed. His role in the group remains that of the primary physical fighter and protector, often providing the muscle to counteract Lina's magical prowess while also serving as a source of comedic relief due to his simple-mindedness.

Key relationships define much of Guido's character. His bond with Lina is the most significant, characterized by mutual trust and reliance, with Guido acting as her shield in dangerous situations. He shares a solid friendship with Zelgadis, respecting him despite his gruff exterior and chimera appearance. The swordswoman Sylphiel is one of the few people whose name he can remember, largely because of her excellent cooking, and he acts as a protective older brother figure toward her, seemingly oblivious to her romantic feelings for him. He also has a long-standing rivalry turned friendship with the swordsman Zangulus, based on mutual respect for each other's skills.

Throughout the series, Guido undergoes subtle development, primarily in his acceptance of his role without the Sword of Light. His most notable abilities are his incredible swordsmanship and his unique connection to his weapon. When using a regular blade inserted into his sword's hilt or by activating its mechanism, he can manifest the Sword of Light, an energy blade that can cut through almost anything. Interestingly, the original creator of the series has stated that Guido actually has a massive latent magical capacity that could rival Lina's destructive power, but his terrible memory makes it impossible for him to learn the necessary spell incantations, rendering him useless as a magician.
