Description
The character of Il Conte Di Montecristo, whose original name is Edmond Dantes, serves as the central figure in the anime Gankutsuou. This version of the character is a profound departure from a simple wronged man seeking justice, instead presenting a figure who has made a pact with a demonic entity to achieve his ends. Before his imprisonment, Edmond Dantes was an innocent, honest, and kind young man, but years of wrongful incarceration in the Chateau d'If prison changed him irrevocably. It was during this time of suffering and growing hatred that he attracted the attention of Gankutsuou, a powerful, malevolent being also known as the King of the Cavern. Edmond made a Faustian bargain with this entity, trading his body, mind, and soul in exchange for the immense power and dark wisdom needed to exact revenge on those who betrayed him. The entity Gankutsuou becomes a constant presence, manifesting as a glowing purple tattoo on the Count's forehead and eventually crystallizing his heart, making him more susceptible to its corrupting influence and driving him toward immorality.

In his public persona as the Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond is an enigmatic, otherworldly figure of immense wealth and cold, calculating charisma. He possesses a frigid and calculating demeanor, yet he holds an almost hypnotic allure, projecting an erotic visage that others find both fascinating and terrifying. His motivations are singular and all-consuming: to systematically destroy the lives of the three aristocrats who framed him—Fernand Mondego, who desired his fiancée Mercedes; the jealous accountant Danglars; and the corrupt magistrate Villefort. Unlike traditional avengers, the Count in Gankutsuou is cruel, malicious, and bloodthirsty, showing little regard for the innocent family members who become collateral damage in his elaborate schemes. His role in the story is that of an agent of chaos, a satanic hero who manipulates everyone around him like pieces on a chessboard. He deliberately befriends Albert de Morcerf, the son of his greatest enemy, to gain entry into Parisian high society and to use the young man as a tool to torment his father. His actions lead to tragic outcomes, including the accidental death of the innocent Franz d'Epinay.

Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Albert is the most complex, as the Count finds himself manipulated by his own growing, conflicted feelings for the young man, which were performed with the subtext of a love scene by the voice actors. The Count also shares a profound connection with Haydee Tebelin, a former princess whom he has raised since childhood after buying her out of slavery; she is both a loyal companion and a weapon he will use to reveal Fernand's crimes. As the series progresses, the Count undergoes significant development, moving from a being of pure, calculated vengeance to one increasingly conflicted. He begins to question his own actions as he comes to care for Albert, realizing that his quest for revenge has a terrible cost. The entity Gankutsuou eventually betrays him, attempting to take total control of his mind and body during his final confrontation with Fernand Mondego. In the end, it is not violence but a sincere expression of love and friendship from Albert that exorcises the demonic entity from Edmond, leading to his own demise and final redemption.

The Count possesses extraordinary abilities, most of which stem from his supernatural pact. He has access to nearly limitless wealth that allows him to manipulate financial markets and create illusory identities. He can bend the wills of others to a supernatural degree, and his powers cause his own body to crystallize as a side effect, requiring special medicine to keep the entity Gankutsuou at bay. His characteristic ability is his gift for intricate, long-term manipulation, setting elaborate traps for his enemies that lead to their psychological and social ruin before their physical destruction.
