Description
Claire-Marie-Eugénie de Danglars is the only daughter of the wealthy Baron Danglars and his wife, Hermine. At seventeen years old, she is described as having black hair, black eyes, and notably pale skin. Her full name, which includes the prefixes Claire and Marie, is mentioned by her first fiancé, Albert de Morcerf.

Her personality is defined by a strong sense of independence and a deep detachment from her family's obsession with wealth and social status. Growing up in a loveless and corrupt household, where her father sought financial gain through her marriage and her mother was absorbed in投机, she developed a belief that no one ever loved her and that she would love no one in return. Unlike her parents, she shows little interest in money, instead focusing on art and her own sense of self.

Eugénie's primary motivation is her dream of becoming a professional artist. While one source specifies her aspiration is to be a singer, confident she can succeed in Italy without her family's fortune, another states her dream is to become a professional pianist. This artistic ambition is the driving force behind her actions. Consequently, she resents her father's plans to arrange her marriages solely to increase his wealth and elevate the family name.

In the story, she is initially introduced as the childhood friend and fiancée of Albert de Morcerf, though she appears displeased with the arrangement and treats him with coldness at times, despite showing her affections through composing music. Her father then breaks this engagement to arrange a new one with Andrea Cavalcanti, a man posing as a nobleman, hoping to secure an even greater financial benefit. Eugénie herself, however, has no interest in marrying any man. The narrative strongly implies a romantic relationship with her female music teacher, Louise d'Armilly, who is her lover and companion.

Her role in the Count of Monte Cristo's revenge plot is largely passive. The Count seeks to ruin her father financially, using Andrea Cavalcanti, who is secretly a criminal named Benedetto, as a tool. On the day of her wedding to Andrea, the ceremony is broken up by police after the death of a convict who identifies the groom as his murderer.

Eugénie is unconcerned by the scandal and her family's ruin. In fact, she had already made plans to escape her predetermined life. With indirect help from the Count, who provides her with a forged passport, she cuts her hair, dresses in men's clothing, and flees to Italy with Louise d'Armilly to pursue her dream of becoming an artist. She possesses the talent and means to live well on her own, believing that being free to live as an artist is the key to her own happiness, even without great wealth.
