Description
Miya Asama is the landlady of the Izumo Inn and is feared throughout the Sekirei world as the Hannya of the North. She is Sekirei number 01, the oldest living Sekirei, and was once the leader of the first generation of the Disciplinary Squad, though she later claimed that she was a completely different person during her time with MBI. Despite her fearsome reputation, she presents herself as a calm, gracious, and motherly figure to the residents of her inn, enforcing a strict rule of no fighting or profanity on the premises. Those who break this rule often see the visage of a demon behind her smiling face, a manifestation of her intimidating aura.
Her background is defined by her marriage to Takehito Asama, a researcher at MBI who was not an Ashikabi (a human with the genetic ability to wing Sekirei). Because of this, Miya remains unwinged and does not bear a Sekirei mark on her body. Takehito’s death left her as the sole owner of the Izumo Inn, which she operates as a sanctuary for those in need, honoring a tradition of never turning away anyone seeking shelter. She hides her identity as a Sekirei from most people; only a few, such as Homura (Sekirei 06) and former members of the first Disciplinary Squad, know her true nature. When asked about the whereabouts of Sekirei 01, she answers that she died long ago, alongside Takehito.
Miya’s motivations are rooted in a desire to maintain peace and neutrality within the Sekirei Plan. She is aware of the larger schemes at play and possesses the power to disrupt them, but she refrains from acting because she fears that her involvement would trigger a large-scale response from MBI’s punitive squads, endangering many lives. However, after witnessing the sincere feelings of Minato Sahashi and his Sekirei following the death of Uzume, she decides to abandon her neutrality and reveal her identity, calling herself a being neither human nor Sekirei but something akin to a goddess. Her decision stems from a wish to guide Minato and protect the bonds he has formed.
In the story, Miya serves as a powerful benefactor and mentor to Minato and his group. She offers them shelter at the Izumo Inn, which becomes their home base, and she personally trains Musubi in martial arts. Her role shifts from a neutral observer to an active participant in the final stages of the Sekirei Plan, ultimately facing Musubi in a decisive battle on Kouten. Through this conflict, she tests Minato’s resolve and the strength of his connections with his Sekirei.
Key relationships include her late husband Takehito, whose memory she honors deeply, and Minato, whom she respects for his compassion and growth. She also maintains a complex history with other high-ranking Sekirei and former Disciplinary Squad members, as well as a protective but strict bond with the other residents of her inn, such as Homura, Matsu, and later the other Sekirei who join Minato.
Miya’s development is marked by a gradual transition from a grieving, isolated woman focused on preserving the past to a decisive figure who chooses to act for the future of all Sekirei and Ashikabi. She acknowledges that she was a different person in her youth, implying a personal evolution shaped by loss and responsibility.
Her notable abilities are immense. As a master swordswoman, she can generate powerful shock waves with a single swing of her sword, and her strength is considered the greatest among all Sekirei. Even the most powerful opponents acknowledge that she operates on a completely different level. Beyond physical combat, she possesses an overwhelming presence that can instill terror in others, a trait that earned her the title Hannya of the North and keeps the Izumo Inn safe from attack.
