Description
Minato Sahashi is the central male protagonist of Sekirei: Pure Engagement. He is a nineteen year old high school graduate who has failed his university entrance examinations two years in a row. Despite his academic intelligence and natural aptitude for strategic thinking, he struggles with a severe lack of self-confidence and an initially passive personality. His life changes dramatically when he encounters Musubi, a Sekirei who literally falls from the sky onto him and chooses him as her Ashikabi, a human partner capable of activating a Sekirei's full power through a contract formed by a kiss. Minato later learns that he possesses a unique genetic makeup that allows him to wing multiple Sekirei, an almost impossible feat under normal circumstances.
Minato's personality is defined by a deep sense of kindness, an upright spirit, and a strong desire to protect those close to him. Although he begins the story as insecure and hesitant, his love for his Sekirei and his determination to shield them from harm gradually make him more confident and assertive. He often places himself in danger to keep his Sekirei from fighting needlessly, a trait that some peers misinterpret as cowardice but actually endears him further to his partners. He is humble and not prone to boasting, yet he proves himself capable of devising clever strategies that make the best use of his Sekirei's abilities in battle.
In Sekirei: Pure Engagement, the story enters the second stage of the Sekirei Plan, and the city of Shintou Teito is sealed so that no Sekirei or Ashikabi may leave. Minato and his growing team of Sekirei—Musubi, Tsukiumi, Kusano, Matsu, Kazehana, and Homura—must prepare for new battles as the rules of the competition change. He becomes known as the Ashikabi of the North, a title earned because he lives in the northern district and is associated with the powerful Sekirei Miya Asama. Minato plays a pivotal role as the leader of his group, facing ruthless opponents such as Higa Izumi and navigating the escalating dangers of the Plan. His motivation extends beyond personal survival; he seeks to protect his Sekirei and eventually work toward dismantling the system that forces them to fight.
Key relationships shape Minato's growth. His bond with Musubi is the foundation of his journey, built on mutual trust and affection. He also develops close ties with each of his other Sekirei, treating them with care and respect rather than as tools. His younger sister Yukari appears in the story, and his mother Takami Sahashi works as a high-ranking researcher at MBI, the corporation that oversees the Sekirei Plan. Later revelations connect Minato to the mastermind of the game itself, adding further complexity to his role.
Minato does not possess supernatural combat abilities; his strength lies in his intellect, his strategic mind, and his capacity to form deep emotional bonds that unlock the full potential of his Sekirei. Over the course of Pure Engagement, he grows from a self-doubting ronin into a more decisive and courageous leader, willing to face overwhelming odds for the sake of those he loves. His development is marked by his increasing willingness to take action and his refusal to abandon his principles, even when the battle royale demands ruthless choices.
