Description
Kyōko Iwase is a street racer from the Saitama region who serves as the fastest member and uphill representative of an unnamed team based around Sadamine. She later becomes part of the Northern Saitama Alliance. She drives a black Mazda RX-7 FD3S fitted with a single-turbocharger setup, a modification that gives her car peaky power delivery with strong high-end performance. In her daily life, she works at an auto parts store, presenting an ordinary appearance that contrasts with her intense dedication to racing.
Her personality is defined by a straightforward and passionate nature. She is highly selective about romantic partners, stating that she is only interested in men who drive a rotary-engined car, particularly an FD, and who can drive faster than she can. This reflects her deeper motivation: her love for driving and her specific attachment to the FD chassis and rotary engine are central to her identity. She finds more enjoyment in driving than in casual relationships.
Her role in the story begins when she encounters Keisuke Takahashi by chance after he finds her dropped mobile phone. She develops an immediate infatuation with him, seeing him as her ideal partner. This personal connection is tested when Project D arrives in her area, and she is chosen to race Keisuke uphill on her home course. The race is closely contested, with her single-turbo FD challenging Keisuke, but she ultimately loses when Keisuke exploits the car's weakness in low-rev response on uneven road surfaces. Despite the defeat, her respect and feelings for him deepen.
After the race, she pursues Keisuke, traveling to his home course at Akagi to confess her feelings. He rejects her romantic advances, stating that he cannot afford distractions while focusing on Project D. Later, when Keisuke's own FD is sabotaged before a race at Tsuchisaka, she lends him her car without hesitation. This act of support allows Keisuke to win and demonstrates her willingness to prioritize his success over her own pride.
The key relationship in her arc is with Keisuke Takahashi. He is both her rival and the object of her affection. She also has a teammate, Nobuhiko Akiyama, within her local car club. Her interactions with Keisuke are characterised by mutual respect for each other's driving ability and a tension between her personal feelings and his single-minded commitment to racing.
In terms of development, Kyōko shifts from a driver who values independence and skill above all else to someone who is willing to sacrifice her own competitive stance to support someone she cares about. After lending her car and spending a brief, almost date-like time with Keisuke, he tells her they cannot meet again to avoid complicating his focus. She accepts this decision, and her storyline concludes with her respecting his dedication to Project D.
Her notable abilities include a high level of technical skill on her home course, Sadamine, where she is considered the fastest driver. Her knowledge of her car's specifications, including the characteristics of a single-turbo rotary, is thorough. She is also capable of pushing Keisuke to his limits during their race, forcing him to refine his throttle control and driving strategy. Her willingness to lend her personal car to him under pressure further shows her practical judgment and emotional strength.
