Description
Kaname Tosen is a former captain of the Ninth Division in the Gotei 13, the organization of Soul Reapers entrusted with maintaining the balance between the world of the living and the afterlife. He is a man of average height with a slim build, known for his dark skin and dark purple hair, which he typically wears in a style resembling cornrows or a reggae-inspired look. His most defining physical characteristic is his blindness, which has been the case since birth. To cover his eyes, he wears a distinct, clear visor or pair of goggles. His standard captain's uniform is often accented by an orange scarf or sash worn around his neck.
Tosen's personality is deeply complex and rooted in a powerful personal philosophy. He is a pacifist at heart, who believes his life's mission is to "take the path with the least bloodshed". He carries himself with a calm and stoic demeanor, rarely showing overt emotion and often speaking in measured, deliberate tones. However, beneath this serene exterior lies a profound internal conflict between his ideals and his desires. He is driven by a singular, unwavering sense of what he calls "justice," a concept that becomes increasingly twisted as the story progresses. While he claims to abhor violence, he is willing to commit terrible acts in the name of a higher purpose, revealing a considerable degree of pride and arrogance, once describing himself as a "pure being".
A key aspect of his personality is his disdain for those he perceives as warmongers who cause senseless destruction, such as the Soul Reaper captain Kenpachi Zaraki and the Arrancar Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez. Tosen sees such individuals as threats to peace that must be eliminated.
The foundation of Tosen's entire character is his origin story. Before becoming a Soul Reaper, a close female friend named Kakyo was murdered by her husband, a noble, after she reproached him for killing a comrade. When Tosen sought justice through official channels, the Central 46, the governing body of Soul Society, dismissed his plea because the killer was from a powerful noble family. This profound injustice shattered his faith in the system. He took up his friend's Zanpakuto, the spirit weapon of a Soul Reaper, and vowed to carry on her wish for a peaceful world, but his personal quest for revenge became the hidden engine of all his actions. He later met and befriended Sajin Komamura, the anthropomorphic wolf-like captain of the Seventh Division. Their friendship was born from mutual understanding, as Komamura was ashamed of his appearance and Tosen could not see it, allowing them to connect without judgment.
Within the Soul Society, Tosen served as the captain of the Ninth Division, a unit that also acts as the publishers of the Seireitei Communication, the Soul Society’s newspaper. He served as the publication's chief editor, where he was known to write a column on cooking and was himself a skilled chef. His lieutenant was Shuhei Hisagi, whom he mentored and taught the important lesson that one should not fear the blade they wield.
Tosen's role in the main storyline is that of a traitor. It is revealed that he was a long-time co-conspirator of Sosuke Aizen, the principal antagonist of the series, along with Gin Ichimaru. He betrayed Soul Society not for power, but because he believed Aizen's plan to overthrow the existing order was the only way to achieve a world of true justice and the path of least bloodshed, even if it required necessary evils. His blindness made him uniquely valuable to Aizen, as it rendered him immune to the complete hypnosis of Aizen’s Zanpakuto, Kyoka Suigetsu, allowing him to act without being trapped in an illusion.
Throughout the story, Tosen undergoes a significant and tragic development. After fleeing to Hueco Mundo, the world of Hollows, with Aizen, he abandons his captain's haori for a simpler military-style uniform. He is granted Hollow-like powers by Aizen, becoming a Visored-like being. In the final battle against the Gotei 13, he confronts his former best friend, Komamura, and his former lieutenant, Hisagi. Here, he reveals his hidden hatred for the Soul Society that failed to avenge his friend and unleashes his new power. He achieves a form of "Resurreccion," an Arrancar ability, which transforms his body and, for the first time in his life, grants him sight. Overwhelmed by this new sense, he uses it to brutally defeat Komamura. However, his obsession with seeing causes his situational awareness to falter, allowing Hisagi to fatally wound him from behind. As he lies dying, regaining his sight and seeing the faces of his friends for the first and last time, he is ultimately destroyed by Aizen, who claims this act was a final "mercy" to spare him further suffering.
As a combatant, Tosen is a formidable warrior. His Zanpakuto is named Suzumushi, which translates to "pure insect". Its Shikai, or initial release, is activated by the command "Cry" and produces a high-pitched tone that can render any listener unconscious instantly. It also has another ability called Benihiko, which creates a swarm of blade-like projectiles to rain down on an opponent. His Bankai, the final release, is named "Suzumushi Tsuishiki: Enma Korogi" or "Final Form: Cricket of Hell". This ability creates a massive black dome that completely erases all senses—sight, hearing, smell, and the ability to sense spiritual pressure—for anyone trapped inside except for Tosen himself, who retains his sense of touch to feel his strikes. After his transformation under Aizen, he is able to don a Hollow mask, greatly enhancing his speed and strength. His most powerful form is his Resurreccion, Grillete Grillo, which transforms him into a large, insectoid creature and blesses him with sight, at the cost of his other finely-tuned senses.
