Description
Kagerou, also known by the alias Kage Hoshi, is a central figure in the story. She is originally from the Warring States period in Japan, approximately four hundred years before the main events of the series, and is the true mother of the protagonist, Recca Hanabishi. As a member of the Hokage ninja clan, she lived during a time of great conflict, particularly during the clan's battle against the forces of the warlord Oda Nobunaga.

When she first appears under the name Kage Hoshi, her personality seems cold, calculating, and manipulative, even serving as an early antagonist. However, this demeanor is a façade born from centuries of loneliness and hardship. In truth, she is a deeply caring and maternal figure who has suffered immense tragedy and isolation. Her primary motivation is love for her son, Recca. During the destruction of the Hokage clan, she used a forbidden time-manipulation technique called Jikuryuri to send the infant Recca four hundred years into the future to save his life, a spell that also accidentally transported her stepson, Kurei. The technique came with a terrible price: it granted her absolute immortality, preventing her from aging, dying, or being permanently harmed, but it also cursed her to an eternal existence separated from her son, as the spell's conditions prevent her from touching him.

For four centuries, she wandered Japan, living through endless years in search of her son. Once she finally finds Recca, her role in the story transforms from an initial adversary into a crucial mentor and advisor. She becomes a guiding figure for Recca and his team, known as Team Hokage, offering her vast wisdom, strategic insight, and extensive knowledge of the mystical weapons known as Madogu. Her long life has granted her a perspective that is invaluable to the younger characters, and she is deeply respected by them.

A key aspect of her relationship with Recca is the profound, tragic love of a mother who can watch over, guide, and speak with her son but is physically forbidden from the simple, warm embrace of a parent and child due to the spell's restrictions. Her other significant relationship is with Kurei, Recca's older half-brother, who was also sent to the future. In the past, she showed Kurei compassion and intervened to spare his life when the clan elders sentenced him to death, a decision that created a complicated history between them.

As a character, Kagerou develops from a lonely, mysterious figure shrouded in secrecy to an open and caring guardian. While she remains capable of being clever or deceptive to achieve her goals, her actions are consistently driven by a desire to protect Recca and his friends. She is exceptionally knowledgeable about Madogu, and her own arsenal is formidable. Her primary tool is the Eikai Gyoku, or Shadow Ball, a powerful Madogu that allows her to teleport through shadows, observe distant events through scrying, and project images of the past. She also wields the Shikigami, an orb that hardens strands of her hair into razor-sharp needles or blades for combat. In the past, she used a crescent-shaped, boomerang-like sword called the Kaigetsu, and later gains a claw-type weapon known as the Hokishin. Complementing these tools is her own physical prowess; as a highly skilled kunoichi (female ninja), she possesses enhanced strength, speed, agility, and reflexes, along with an expert ability in hand-to-hand combat, and is even capable of closing her mind to make telepathy useless against her.
